To shred, or not to shred? That is the question… for QLD Public Servants.

Member for Burnett Rob Messenger today has called on Queensland’s 180,000 plus public servants to think twice before following directions from people associated with the Labor party, who may order the destruction or shredding of public documents.

Mr Messenger said that in the lead up to the 2012 state election, and with a likely change in government predicted by most polls and experts, improper political pressure could be placed on public servants to shred documents, which may contain evidence of crimes and/or corruption.

“At this time of the electoral cycle, and after at least 10 years of corrupt Labor governments, public servants need to be extra vigilant and mindful of: the Public Records Act 2002, the Criminal Code, (attempting to pervert the course of justice and/or conspiracy) and sections 92, 92A and 200 (abuse of authority - prejudicing the rights of an individual)” said Mr Messenger.

“Queensland Public Servants could face severe penalties ranging from a $16,500 fine to 7 years jail, if they follow improper orders and destroy a public record, (as stated in CL 13 of Public Records Act) without: (a) an authority given by the archivist; or (b) other legal authority, justification or excuse.” Mr Messenger said.

“As we’ve seen in the past with famous cases like the Heiner Affair, the Labor party is quick to destroy evidence of criminal activity. If people are still silly enough to argue the question of whether corruption and cover up has been a problem for QLD Labor, I remind them that noted crime fighter and retired judge, Tony Fitzgerald, said in March 2010 that, After an "auspicious" start with a reform agenda, Labor had fallen back and "is now taking the opportunity to give its supporters their turn at the trough"

“Of course the only way to properly deal with the years of Labor corruption and discover where all the missing taxpayer money went, is to hold an independent inquiry or Royal Commission. It’s understandable that Labor won’t support an independent inquiry into corruption, but it saddens and shocks me that the LNP and Campbell Newman have the same attitude.

It begs the question, What have they got to hide and cover up? I will continue my fight for the establishment of a Royal Commission into political corruption though out this election campaign ”said Mr Messenger.

I have sent the Brisbane Times link to John McVeigh, The Chronicle and a few others with the note that Rob Messenger MP started the cautionary warning.

Good to see that members of the press are paying attention, and have joined in spreading caution about possible government attempts to destroy evidence.

Oh yes there are many people watching the Just Grounds site, the number of hits and feed back we recieve occationally confirm this. That's why as a moderator at times I'm tough on what members write. Members whenever you write something please remember that the few people who respond on site aren't your biggist audiance, rather it's the many hundreds of lurkers out there watching in. If Just Grounds is to be a credible source of information members need to remember to take some care with the content of their replies.

Who says people don't take any notice of what appears on Just Grounds?

I just wish that the Journalist would have the professional integrity to acknowledge where they sourced the idea for the article from..

From the Brisbane Times, Gang of nine watches over the shredder.

Just nine people are responsible for preventing Queensland government documents at 650 public authorities being shredded if Labor loses office.

The dogged Kevin Lindeberg, now a lecturer in public governance and the person who triggered Queensland's notorious Heiner Inquiry with his "Shreddergate" allegations, still thinks important documents will be shredded.

Mr Lindeberg wants document watchers in ministerial offices.

"On past experience, I do not share Mr Finns's confidence about the proper protection of Queensland public records," Mr Lindeberg said.

There will be a lot of people pushing for this one.  It has never gone away and never will until those responsible get some retribution.

I cannot believe they are are all in highly paying jobs thinking they can get away with it all.

Someone at the centre of the whole debacle is supposed to be going to spill the beans very soon I have heard on radio.  We can only pray for that.

Unfortunately, the Liberal Government hasn't done that here, most of the thieves have got off Scot free.

What again. Would they dare after what Rudd did?

But what am I saying, when Labor left office in NSW, the shredders and the recycle trucks were burning rubber....

Look at the mess they left and many of them were already facing charges of corruption, think how many more, if the documents had been available.

Sadly, even if Kevin 747 were convicted in the shreddergate scandal, it probably wouldn't harm his aspirations to a distinguished career at the UN (where a demonstrated zeal for corruption has become almost a job requirement).

Rory,

Kevin Linderberg, the whistle blower at the centre of the Heiner Affair assures me that the LNP will act on the Heiner matters. I can't see how they would not be required to establish a royal commission to deal with the Heiner issues.

It is the one of the worst examples of political corruption. Every one must put pressure on the Liberals within the LNP to agree to a Royal Commission. It would mean that Labor would be in the political wilderness for the next 30 years. It would also mean that Gordon Nuttal would not be the only former labor minister in jail.
