The ADF culture needs to be brought into the present day

I left the RAAF in the 1980's and I admit that when I was in their was a attitude against women in particular Female Defence force personnel.  As ashamed as I am now for this attitude I was not someone that regarded women as second class citizens, but I knew of a number who did, and they were regarded as good blokes and real characters.
For anyone who never went through the services you may struggle to understand how this is able to fester, and that answer is simple, Senior Officers!  They are so intent on not having the image of the forces dragged through the mud, they try to squash any incidents rather than see it hit the media, this includes assault, rape, and drunken behaviour.

I  recall a medical orderly who was homosexual, at a time when this was not allowed in the service.  This orderly was well known on the base as being gay, but no one worried about it.  Unfortunately one day a picture of his kissing his partner appeared in a Adelaide paper, and due to this the RAAF immediately took action and drummed him out of the service before it could become a media spectacle.

This had occurred for many years for anyone that may cause a media storm, they always took the smoke and mirrors approach with personnel.  I had heard of a number of sexual assault cases while I was in the service, but I only recall 1 of these that became public knowledge.

The 1 I recall was in fact a civilian female that attended the base disco, ended up going to her boyfriends room and was discovered in the early hours of the morning in bushes, she had been raped and murdered, this could not be  made to go away and the mood from Senior Officers were angry this had occurred, but instead of taking a number of steps to assist and to admonish people that failed in their duties, they were angry because this reflected badly on the base, and on them.

This was the culture, of course because of this investigation the place was cleaned up and they made an effort to change the way reports were handled.  Well we have heard enough over the years to know nothing has changed, and now these last few stories shows the culture has not altered in all these years,  37 years that I am aware of, and much longer when listening to others stories.

Now The Minister for Defence is rightly angry with the ADF for these last outbursts and abuse of a female, and the Defence Chiefs are attacking the Minister, when they should be agreeing with him.

The latest allegations of breach of privacy, I would have thought sexual abuse, and hopefully the AFP will find other charges.  What was worrying is that the AFP, were considering if there were charges they could place against the guy involved.  The Defence Force should have made a strong statement and kicked this guy out and then looked at the involvement of the others in this.

It is time to make a stand and see the Defence Forces culture brought into line with this decade, and if the fossils.  Even when I made a short post on this I was surprised at the women blaming this girl?  The only thing she did wrong was be strongly attracted to a guy who was a woman abuser.  This isn't even a case of pics taken and promised to keep private, this was purposely webcast to his mates in another room without her knowledge.  He must be dealt with and she should be protected, however, in this Defence Force you are more likely to see this the other way round.

Rae, I know I have a relative that I helped through a really tough time, and it was revealed she had been raped by 3 different guys and on more than one occasion when she was a teen

Rae, I never said YOU blamed the girl, I mentioned your name due to the "It is all smoke and mirrors to get Stephen Smith noticed." post. A lot of other people are trying to make me, and others drop this campaign to get to the core of the issue, so didn't want anyone losing track of this isn't about this fraud Smith, he is backing away already. It is about the justice and ending this culture of cover up once and for all.

Bloody hell Kevin I never blamed the girl!

Obviously I agree with your views. However, the issue has been there for years in all the armed services. Perhaps the 'delightful' Mr. Smith will get it all sorted.....what chance that Kevin, considering those at the top of the tree have been closing their eyes to these matters of sexual depravity for years. It happens to the young men as well. Some have even suicide.

There seems to be some school of thought that these experiences 'toughen them up' or some such illogical hierarchical thinking. Or it's a good laugh? I don't know what they think. In fact I hardly ever know what men think when it comes to sex and vulnerable women.

It is wrong but will they pay for their crimes? People committing these crimes in society don't get the sentences they deserve, so what chance is there of that happening in the services? Time and again we see these injustices coming to the fore. Some poor girl out for the night with friends, getting drugged and assaulted. In fact I would say it is happening more and more.

Sexual assault is so hard to prove

Let me tell you Kevin there are many women out here who have been assaulted more then once in their liftimes and have never reported the matter.

Rae I saw in your post a view that was true, but you neglected the real issue, and that is a woman has been defiled by this animal filming their lovemaking and broadcasting it to his friends without her knowledge. They then took stills of the video and past them around the Division. She needed support after this only to discover little would be done, and she went to the press in disgust. A angry Commodore had her carpeted before him and told this 18 yo girl who was feeling vulnerable she should apologise to the Division and it was arranged for her to do so in a morning parade that she reluctantly agreed to. It never happened because the animals in her Division were calling her names and threatening her. Still nothing happened to the other Cadets and this young woman was left more humiliated than ever. Now with so many allegations coming forth we must see a change by suggesting to Senior Officers it would be best they resigned their Commissions and new blood brought in and the guys responsible for the act on Kate being thrown out of the ADF.

Too many women and it appears a number of men have had to live with the humiliation and shame with absolutely no support mechanism for them at the time these crimes were committed. I just hope we will see a fair hearing and some action now, but with the present Government I struggle to believe it, remember when Smith showed outrage his own Party attacked him, because of it. Now we see Combet making attempts to shut down business complaints in much the same manner, and Andrew Wilkie, one of the people responsible for some of these actions, but unwilling to apologise for it. It is apparent this attitude is very much a part of this Government's philosophy, so the chance of these people getting a fair hearing and appropriate action rests with us, the opposition and a shaky Stephen Smith,

Peter, I meant number of women in the service.

Rae and Heather, if Kate was you, your sister, your daughter what would you have done?

Cut off his communication with his brain if I got the chance..

Well said Peter

Thanks Dale

Rae and Heather, if Kate was you, your sister, your daughter what would you have done?  This is not about Smith getting noticed, this is about finally doing something about the attitude of Senior Officers in the ADFA.  As Dale points out I am not the only one, there are 2 other ex services people on here that verify this attitude not only exists, but is actually criminal in nature for they are hiding crimes and aiding and abetting these guys that commit these crimes by squashing and humiliating those that raise allegations.  I am not a Labor man, but as long as Smith does not fold under pressure I am behind him on this.

Sorry Rae & Heather I can't agree that this whole eposode has been engineered to make Stephen Smith be noticed. There are 3 ex servicemen who have made comment to this blog indicating that this is a problem with a culture within the ADF that has got a long history.

Spot on Rae...very predictable as he is the only one left that has any credibility.
