GILLARD GOVERNMENT SELLS OUT HUMPBACK WHALES IN CARIBBEAN

At the recent IWC meeting in Panama, Tony Burke, leading the Australian IWC delegation voted in support of a quota for St Vincents & The Grenadines which will allow 24 Humpback whales to be slaughtered over the next six years.

The US " bundled" together genuine Aboriginal subsistence quotas with non idigenous, highly controversial quotas including one for St Vincents. In spite of the Chair of the National Trust advising the Convention meeting that there has never been any history of Aboriginal whaling in her country, and in spite of detailing the appalling cruelty involved in the kill, Australia gave a vote in support.

St Vincents & The Grenadines have a long history of infractions at the IWC. Cows and calves are chased by speedboats and harpooned from speedboats. As one IWC NGO writes:- " whalers" chase them around in speedboats, violating every rule in the book, separating mothers from babies and killing whoever and wherever they can. These actions have been supported by Australia's vote.

In spite of the fact the vote by Burke is a total contradiction of Australia's anti whaling policies, and in spite of sending out press releases to all major radio stations and newspapers, both metro and regional, no media will cover this story.

Has Australia become a puppet of the US embracing its pro-whaling policies ?

Shame you cant apologise, isn't it. Then again, I guess that's how YOU people are. ( bet you dont like that, but that's how it feels when people rush to judgement)

I spent a considerable amount of time lobbying against Low Frequency Active Sonar in the European Parliament and worked closely with the then Chair of the EU Fisheries Committee, a lovely Scotsman. It was shocking to hear of the destruction of the European fisheries by these super trawlers and my group supported the Fisheries Committee and the commercial fishers as much as we were able being an Australian group. It's a disaster to allow this super trawler into Australian waters and we will be making strong complaints to the awful Gillard govt for what it's worth. No one listens or responds and the media does not cover anything controversial.

Perhaps you can try responding without the insults.

We're focused on the Great Barrier Reef, dugongs, turtles, whales, dolphins, indigenous hunting. As my group is also an International Whaling Commission NGO, we're extremely concerned about the sell out of Australia's anti whaling policy by the Gillard government.

I'm not sure why these comments are so insulting. None of you know me and if you did, you would be aware that I personally do not and have never voted Green, I detest their policies. Australians for Animals opposes the marine sanctuaries, they will be the death of the commercial fishing industry and we support the Gladstone Fishers and the continuation of Australia's commercial fishing industry. These guys have the real knowledge of the state of the oceans. My group is also focused on the issue of acoustic impacts in the underwater environment as the failure of the state and fed govt to legislate on these impacts makes a mockery of the creation of so called marine sanctuaries.

In your rush to judgement, you might at least ensure for starters you have the right group.

However your request for information on the Super Trawler FV Magiris out of Holland and registered in Lithuania,It is currently en route to Abidjan in the Cote de Ivore (Ivory Coast) of West Africa .

Despite the blatant Lies of the Green Labor Government there is no way you take a 10,000 tonne Factory Freezer Trawler half way around the world without having a signed Permission Slip from the Authorities to Plunder our Fisheries.

Oh and by the way just how poor are the University Journalism courses these days, Fairfax gone upmarket yet, How come despite too few knowing about this Ship coming to Tasmania as people think to fish our Pelagic Fisheries.

Why has nobody except myself picked up on the fact that as well as this ship coming here the Gillard Government despite announcing many so called "New Marine Preserves" they have actually expanded a number of offshore Fishing areas,Possibly to accomodate this Ship and maybe others like Her.

These EU Factory Trawlers have basically destroyed European Fisheries and as well the Fisheries off West Africa and elsewhere the true level of destruction on the Marine Enviroment they cause is far greater than a Few Whales.

Then of course the Inner City type hand wringers cannot be relied apon for "Donations" unless it is something that makes them all warm and fuzzy feeling.

What we practice is Real Enviromental care and it is practised Daily by people on the Land and Oceans who actually work for a living in those enviroments as do many on this site,others here recognise that and add their support like Beverley who has done along with others here far more for Animals and the Enviroment than people from inner city Sydney or Melbourne or the Drug capitals of Northern NSW have ever done.

The vast majority of Journalists of the last quarter century have in truth betrayed the common man and we on this site are well aware of that.

There I have done enough giving you a small smattering of my knowledge on the Magiris Earn your keep as an Investigative Journalist I have given you as well something of a scoop regarding expansion of Australian Fisheries to acomodate this vessel and others like it do some true good for once.
