Ahhh, the dreaded 'R' word. A topic that has caused war for millennia, and is still often unable to be discussed without a decline into chaos. Let's try to keep it civil here! A thread about clergy…Continue

Conservatism always loses out to progress

No doubt in such a conservative forum, the title of this discussion will probably be seen as rather provocative! But, it's a point of view worthy of discussion I think.Listening to a…Continue

"It was after the asbestos beatup. There's only a small percentage of nationwide pits/pipes where it's an issue. Telstra only used it for a decade or so, and some of the pits installed have already been removed over the years for other…"

"It's interesting to note that the people saying how "poor" the takeup of the NBN is have gone all quiet of late. Now we can see why, I suppose. It's gone through the roof. The takeup of the NBN is now about double the takeup of…"

Hobbies / Interests (Optional)
• Touring/Camping around Australia. I've driven much of every state so far, but haven't reached northern-WA or Cape York as yet. One day.

• Computers and other gadgets. My theory is ensuring I have the latest technology will prevent me being left behind as I get older.

• Astronomy and the exploration of Space. NASA's contributions to mankind are phenomenal. I've always been fascinated by space, and plan on getting more into astronomy in the future. If Australia wins the bid for the Square Kilometre Array telescope (look it up!), it would be the most important scientific project of my lifetime, and an incredible achievement for Australia.

• Science and technology in general. My one great regret from my school years is that I didn't concentrate enough in science classes, and decide to go on to study a science discipline at Uni.
More About Me (Optional)
I'm a 4th-generation Australian from mainly English heritage. I'm a video editor at my own small business not too far outside Sydney. One side of my family grew up in rural NSW around Casino, while the other grew up in Sydney's northern suburbs, so I've got a bit of the bush and a bit of the city in me!

I'm passionate about Australia, and about buying Australian whenever I can. I'm also passionate about science and technology, and I'd love to see far more public funding of scientific projects and organisations, and of public education.

I'm very enthusiastic about the Federal Govt's NBN project, because I think it will result in untold benefits for Australia.

Politically, I'm pretty centre. I like some Labor policies and some coalition, so I've voted both ways in the past. Greens are too far Left, One Nation is (was) too far Right!

Can we leave the NBN to the private sector?

Opposition spokesman for communications, Malcolm Turnbull, often repeats the position that the Government should stay out of communications infrastructure, and projects such as the NBN should be left to the private sector (or "the market"), with some assistance provided for "unviable" areas.

NBN launched interim satellite service

I know there's a lot of you here on satellite internet, so this may be of interest to you:

The NBN Co has signed the contracts for it's interim satellite service which will run from this month until 2015 when their dedicated satellites are launched. The interim solution will offer speeds of up to 6Mbps (At least 6 times faster than what you have now), and based on the NBN wholesale pricing it should be considerably cheaper than what you're paying currently for the slower…

Will the NBN be obsolete before it's finished?

With the constant march of technology, there are often concerns expressed that the NBN may be obsolete before it's even finished.

So what are the chances of this happening, and what technologies could potentially make the NBN obsolete?

Let's begin with a basic explanation of the fibre portion of the NBN. It uses…

NBN Article in The Land today

I just came across an article in The Land this-morning, which probably sums up better than I could, the benefits the NBN will bring to rural areas. Here is the article, and the conclusion:
