The big paddock - farmers not to blame for nutrient pollution

Agmates,

I have a background on the Paroo as aq jackaroo and overseer at Tongo Station, and as manager of Calvert Hills Station NT. A lifetime of diving has also provided considerable experience and information rural people might be interested in.

Concerning whether farmers are to blame for damage to coral, see the following article and especially the photograph at:

http://www.solomontimes.com/news.aspx?nwID=4043

I would appreciate any comment. Prove me wrong if possinle. There is need for proper treatment of the real causes of problems in the ocean, and in any case, farmers should not be blamed for something they are not doing. For example how can science know what load of nutrients is coming from Queensland agriculture and what part of the total load is coming from southern cities and towns?

Ocean food web ecosystem devastation impacts agriculture because of a range of reasons including increased cost of fish used for fishmeal and fertilizer. Baitfish are seagrass dependent. Searbirds are baitfish dependent. Guano phosphate supply depends on seabirds.

As fish have become depleted the price of fish has increased, causing feed mills to turn to abattoirs to buy lower cost offal to make meatmeal in place of fishmeal, cattle then eating brain of their own species, resulting in mad cow disease, CJD in humans, and turmoil in beef industry worldwide. My opinion anyway.

Depletion of fish is causing inflation and higher cost of food that an increasing number of people can not afford. Customers are being lost. Unsold food is sometimes reduced in price and virtually dumped at a non viable price.

Of course there are causes and impacts and consequences of world fish resource depletion.

If anyone disagrees, please advise.

Regards,

JF

Hi John,

Recent research suggests that biofuel from Algae is about 30 times more productive per area than the next best alternative. Additionally town sewage has proven itself to be an almost perfect medium in which to foster very high outputs from this algae. Simply put it is well within our grasp now to exchange poo for fuel. All we need now is the incentive and will to act. In the near future councils will be threatened with class actions for not pursuing the best long term enviro practices.

"Hi Malcolm,
Thank you for the reply there and sorry it's taken me so long to respond. There is so much to do urgently re the situation in SI.

While you have had insight re the situation in Solomon Islands I have been hearing a lot about algae and biofuel development overseas. Are you still into that chemistry or whatever? Barnaby Joyce should come onboard with that development because an algae biofuel system could likely include moving water, for example ex sewer water for fibre production. Water infrastructure is surely needed and how perfect if there could be various spin off business.

I started to talk about algae problems and solutions at a Tweed Heads National Party info meeting. After a very brief statement I was replying briefly to a question from a local businessman when Warren Truss cut me off and said he and someone else had not had their dinner, and he there and then closed the meeting. Barnaby was there with Nigel Scullion who suggested I contact him, I have done that twice but have no reply whatsoever.

I wonder if politicians have ability to think laterally and whether they ever do anything constructive and productive.
