G'day Ian,

No, Loz isn't involved in the day to day stuff on farm. SHe asked if could milk but I would prefer her not to. She left the DSE (Dept Sustainability and Environment) in the past 12 months and now works for Trust For Nature. On the side Lauren has established her own environmental consulting business and that looks like it is starting to take off. hopefully it will be very successful and will keep me in a manner I would like to become accustomed to!

Hi Ian, How are you and how is life in Alice Springs?

I'm based 1/2 an hour inland from Taree NSW where I'm working on establishing a fully independent and selfsufficient house and property. It's a mud brick and poured earth house with solar power and hot water, a wide selection od fruit and nut trees and some substantial vege gardens. It all keeps me fairly busy at the moment....but I also like to travel.... I just got back a week and a half ago from a 3 month holiday to India and Hong Kong which was all very interesting and made me appreciate even more what we have going for us in Australia.

On a more serious note, my spare time over the past five years has been spent dealing with a gas pipeline that has been put across our farm. Devious individuals. When that is finished I might post some of the photos that we have and show some of the mess that they made. I am fortunate with my professional background to be able to understand the relevant legislation and deal with the people that we have come up against in this whole ordeal. We are nowhere in the league of Peter Spencer, but I have some empathy over how 'lonely' it can be fighting against the big end of town. Still, every now and then the opposition do something really stupid and it only serves to make us more determined to see the process through to the end.

Sorry I haven't replied earlier. Computer down for a bit and a bit busy to boot!

Brief bit about me? I am a chartered accountant by trade but for the past 15 years have pretended to be a dairy farmer at Timboon in SW Victoria about 10km from the 12 Apostles (Port Campbell). We milk around 420 Jerseys at peak but don't stay at that number for too long as we split calve the herd. (Had a bugger of a time of the past three weeks with mastitis) We irrigate over summer (dams for storage) and grow a lot of fodder crops. I should add I am struggling at the moment with the typing - managed to stab myself in the thumb this morning...

Not married... yet... girlfriend of four years, Lauren. Pleased to say her mum told me I was special, but privately she told Lauren I had better hurry up an ask the question. No pressure. Lauren's happy though - I built her seven raised garden beds in October last year and before that a chook shed and two chook runs. Going great guns - plenty of eggs, squash, tomatoes, beans, strawberries, potatoes etc... I don't but her flowers though - I tend to buy the whole rose bush! I'll post some photos eventually of what it all looks like. Mind you, the next project is a pizza oven. Kind of like the idea but I have never been very good at mixing mud (mortar). Still I am willing to have a crack at most things - bit of a farmer trait I think.

I have travelled overseas a few times. Love it. USA, Jamaica, England, Wales, Ireland, Canada, Bali and South Africa. What were you doing in the USA?

Hi Ian,
Far too many to list! I am in the middle of completing a Certificate 4 in marriage celebrancy which is very interesting and I will be doing funerals and all other forms of clelbrancy as well. I am very keen to devote more time to my acting aspirations (which are not very earth shattering now I am an old boiler!). I'm stepping back into competition after many years away with my horse (again, only those events suitable for persons of a "certain age") and I suppose a bit of prefessional development in my actual paid career so I don't get the sack before I've paid for all this. Not too much really for someone who just wants to milk cows and raise cattle, horses and Irish Wolfhounds! What about yourself what are your plans for the coming year?
