Recently the Australian Defence Association had an opinion piece in the daily paper regarding Nuclear Powered Submarines. They believe that rather than trying to design and build our own modified 'super-collins class', we should look at leasing some nuclear powered attack submarines from the US. We could have the US Navy, together with the good people from Lucas Heights, working together on the maintenance. This would also fit in well with the building of our own nuclear power stations. Already many Asian countries, some with a lesser standard of living than us, have embraced civilian nuclear power generation, are we destined to become the 'White Trash' of Asia?

I have never understood, from the military perspective, why we haven't had nuclear powered subs.

Politics has always got in the way. So much in the way that we now have a Navy with very few ships capable of meeting their design requirements, some can't even put to sea. We have just leased a couple (I think) from the UK as they downsize. Bet we got the best they had available too!!

Read the other day that the border control (there's an oxymoron) vessels are in dire need of servicing, yet we can't do it. Nothing to replace them. There's planning for you.

Meanwhile, there is a booming WA company building ships for the US Navy.

Obviously, it is more important to this government to spend $50b (going up?) on an NBN, than it is to detect people who put to sea in Indonesia in wrecks called boats and are not 'discovered' before they are wrecked at sea or dock in this country.

I suggest unmanned planes (drones) for border control.

Cheers,

Ian
