Check the science behind the 'Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme'

There is no consensus about the science on which the 'Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme' (CPRS) relies for its justification. The fact is that there is no empirical evidence to support the theory that man-induced emissions of greenhouse gasses (GHG's) are the cause of the present mild warming period (only simplistic computer models).

In thinking about a complex issue such as this it pays to follow the KISS principle.

All the claims and counter claims can be refined down to one simple question 'Are man's emissions of GHG's responsible for the warming' (Delineated here as CO2) .

The answer to this question will direct the sort of action that society needs to take. If it is the cause, then we may be justified in taking action to reduce emissions. If on the other hand it can be shown that CO2 is not the cause, then actions to reduce it are an expensive and unnecessary waste of time.

There will be huge costs to the productive and export sectors of our economy, particularly the agricultural sector, arising from the CPRS. It should be a basic prudent commonsense responsibility for the government (and the Coalition) to check the veracity of the science before supporting and enacting the CPRS into law.

The Coalition, or at least the Nationals, need to come up with some attractive alternative to Labor's ETS or CRPS.

I suggest COS, acronym being Carbon and Oxygen Scheme.

In the biosphere these elements are essential for life and are constantly being cycled around the atmosphere, sea and earth in the form of CO2 and 02 gases. We need them to live!

The COS Bill is very simple: That Government should never regulate or tax carbon and oxygen, or their compounds.

COS will have the same effect on climate as Labor's ETS.

COS cost is zero whereas ETS cost is enormous and will destroy the Australian economy.

Once business knows that COS is in effect then business will boom.

Our coal-fired power stations will be saved and we will continue to have cheap electricity, thus our comparative trade advantage will be preserved.

So we could call it the CON Bill (carbon, oxygen and nitrogen) and specifiy what compounds are not to be regulated or taxed, particularly CO2.

I suggest this as a semantic counter measure to Labor's ETS.

Labor will say .... We are not proposing to tax oxygen.
We say .... you might try..... and then explain how we humans have to breath oxygen in order to live. Everyone knows this. But how many people realize we breath out CO2? I vaguely remember that our breath has ca 4% CO2 ????.

Then you explain that it is the same with plants .... they need atmospheric CO2 for photosynthesis to grow, and they release oxygen to the atmosphere. Thats how the oxygen got there in the first place.

How dare the Labor Government interfer with this natural process. This approach would confuse hell out of Labor and the Greens (and MT).

When ever Labor get into power all the pollies launch into a great fury to regulate and tax the populace into misery and destitution. They want to wound the goose that lays the golden egg. They are telling US what not to do. Its time WE told them what is off limits for their ravenous regulations and taxes.

A cynical view, but this ETS is really the first time ever a government has found a way to tax the air we breathe! They have been looking for it since taxation began and everything else has a tax, and now it's on the very air we breathe! What a legacy left by Rudd and Wong!

We are being overwhelmed by new taxes and regulations.

The Nationals should establish a Freedom Prize, akin to the Nobel prizes.

Al Gore and the IPCC won a Nobel Peace prize for screwing up the World and creating the global warming bandwagon.

To combat this bunkum I envisage the Freedom Prize would be awarded to any individual, or Government even, that was instrumental in REMOVING a tax, without replacing it by another one.

They could start by removing the Pay Roll Tax which (large) companies have to pay to employ workers.

The Howard Government was almost on the right track when it brought in GST to replace the wholesale tax, and Peter Costello said "we will get rid of all those little taxes that gum up the works ... account fees, pay roll tax etc ... they are like sand in the gearbox of a car.....it doesnt make the car run better!

Of course, wishful thinking. Pay Roll tax is controlled by the State Governments (Labor) and they thumbed their nose at Costello. Now, when unemployment is rising, we tax companies for employing more workers. How stupid can you get.
