Media Release:  11 February 2012

Independent Candidate for Brisbane Central, Ruth Bonnett, helps form part of a thin line of dedicated volunteers who stand between powerful vested interests and the residents of apartment buildings.

Ruth serves as the Secretary of a large Body Corporate in Brisbane Central: the fourth level of government.

“John Mahoney of Mahoney Lawyers is a typical mouthpiece for the formidable Management Rights industry.  In a recent article Mr Mahoney states that ‘extreme interest groups’ claiming to represent unit owners were ‘hounding government to curtail Management Rights’.”

“He says that the industry must fight against the ‘outrageous demands’ of this ‘fringe element’.”

“I wonder why he seems to be so frightened of a few volunteer committee members who think that important contracts – like Management Rights - should be reviewed every now and again.”

“I wonder why John Mahoney would not want the residents of Brisbane Central to get the very best service for the very best price.”

The Management Rights industry is strongly entrenched in Queensland with over 2,350 Management Rights contracts.  Other states in Australia have far fewer of these contracts, which means that Management Rights contracts are not absolutely necessary for the smooth running of a building.  Many large buildings are now allowing their Management Rights contracts to expire.

“Long term Management Rights contracts protect the banks, and bind Brisbane Central apartment dwellers to higher living costs.”

“It is time the Queensland government started listening to the real stakeholders: the residents whose higher fees and soaring rents fund the Management Rights industry.”

“I will be pushing for the Management Rights industry to be reviewed so that city living can remain sustainable for the long term.”

“Brisbane Central residents deserve better than what Labor has delivered: higher costs to residents, a protected industry and needless tantrums and name calling of the sort we have just seen from Mahoney.”

Hi Ruth,

Good luck with your campaign.

Can you please outline when you intend to pay me the wages and costs I incurred as Secretary of The Queensland Party and which I am justly owed. As a father of five children, I find it difficult to understand why an agreement that was reached has since been reneged upon. I hope that you are not using the approximately six months wages I am owed on your campaign. That would be immoral, not to mention a bad look for you.

Thanks,

Bernie

Hi Bernie,

As the Auntie of dozens of children, and stepmother of two, I find it difficult to understand why you would post your baseless claim online, other than to smear my good character.

I can send you a MUG if you like.

Hi Ruth,

Sarcasm doesn't suit you and it also doesn't hide the fact that you haven't answered the question.

The Queensland Party owes me six months wages, plus other costs, which were all agreed upon by its Executive. These wages were agreed upon because I gave up a career in the military to work full time to establish the party and once I had used my savings, I required a basic wage to feed my family. On the basis that I would get paid, I continued to work full time to assist people like you. I even went further into debt simply to give you and other candidates more support.

You are now Secretary and I am simply asking the question: When will The Queensland Party meet this obligation?

Again, I would hope that your campaign is not being funded by my wages. I am more than happy to publicly acknowledge payment once received, to ensure that your good character is maintained.

Also, I would be more than happy for you to send me a mug.

Thanks,

Bernie

Bernie,

The Queensland Party will go through the records thoroughly.  This is difficult since you did not hand over any correspondence records.

Rest assured that I am funding my own campaign, as an Independent candidate, backed by The Queensland Party.

When the mugs arrive, I will let you know the cost and the shipping, and then you can decide whether you want one.

I think you and Aidan helped start something great, and it is a pity that you have done all you can to destroy the Party.

It hasn't worked, you may have slowed us down but you did not stop us.

Sandra,

Your remarks are completely out of line, and could be considered defamatory on my good character.

I have taken a screenshot of your remarks.

Moderator, would you please have a look to see whether these remarks meet the terms of use for this site?

Thank you.

ps The family I was sitting with are the father and daughters whose mother died of ovarian cancer last year.  I love them dearly and public commentary such as yours can cause real emotional trauma.

Just so you know.

 Go Ruth-

There wouldn't be a more decent honest candidate running in the up coming election!

Thank you Greg and Cate.

Good morning Ruth,

I see your battle for free speech includes admitting that you secretly recorded other people and that when people ask difficult questions you have them struck from the record. You won't allow others to read the truth.

Well done.

You still haven't answered the question, and deleting it won't mean it goes away. When will The Queensland Party meet its obligations to pay wages that were agreed by a unanimous decision of its Executive?

Perhaps you might also like to check the ECQ's register which records debts and liabilities (except wages). You will see clearly there that The Queensland Party owes me for expenses incurred and for which payment is still outstanding.

Just so you know - don't check the Register of Parties as you will not find The Queensland Party there. You will need to look in disclosures and returns.

Remember Ruth, you chose that team.

Have a great day.

Bernie
