Real People - facing the forgotten issues with friendship and a little fun.
Hello all,
I've been through the 40+ pages of comments on the previous discussion, THE ROAD AHEAD - The Post-Convoy Plan, and picked out the best ideas. I then sent a summary out for discussion by some of our most senior members.
Below is what we can focus on over the coming month.
Please do remember that, while the Convoy was an amazing initiative in which Just Grounds was heavily involved, we ARE a multi-faceted community and there is no obligation for all members to undertake the following actions.
However, for those who are keen, read on.
1. Signatures on the Convoy Petition
I know many people are still working on this - thank you so much!
If you do have filled pages, can you please post them on to the PO Box, so that we can get an updated number?
Some ideas for obtaining signatures:
* Take the petition with you to social functions/events in your local area
* Post the link on Facebook pages
* Include the link if you comment on newspaper articles
There was an idea from new member, Paul Starr, about running the trucks with their banners into towns at pre-arranged times to collect signatures. I believe the NRFA are not making any formal plans, however, this idea could be taken up by individual vehicle owners?
I will also link Tony Abbott's petition on the main page underneath the Convoy Petition.
2. Contacting Politicians:
With the "carbon tax" bills to be debated next week, NOW is definitely the time to be in touch with politicians.
I will draw your attention to a link provided by Jan Courtney in regard to the most effective way of communicating with politicians. Ideally, you would raise the issue with your MP by a face-to-face meeting or phone call.
However, in this instance, you may wish to focus on the Independents or the most marginal labor MP's.
At the minimum, send a personally written email. If you have time, post a hard-copy letter. Again, there are excellent tips on how to write an effective letter or email on Jan's link above.
Here is a list of the 15 most marginal seats (thanks, again, Jan). I will also attach new member, Peter Heuscher's, list of email addresses.

3. Protest Rallies:
My understanding is that the NRFA will not be organising further protest events; however, there are events being organised by other organisations:
a. Today, in Coburg, a rally outside Kelvin "Convoy of Incontinence" Thompson's office - see here for details.
b. On Sept 18, in Perth on the foreshore, an Election Now rally - see here for details.
c. On Sept 30, in Melbourne, a rally outside the BOM office - see here for details.
(Please let us know if you are aware of any others.)
Thanks,
Julene Haack

Thank you for all that you do here on JG.
Something to get you motivated with the Convoy Petition???
I did a bit of research and found these statistics HERE:
Since 1988, when the numbers of signatures were first recorded, the petition with the greatest number of signatures was presented on 4 December 2000 concerning taxation and beer prices, with 792,985 signatures.

A hoax is a deceptive act intended to hoodwink people through deliberate misinformation, including factual omissions. My book is about the latter. (And by the way, it can be ordered through primary vendors, and is currently being featured on "new releases" tables at 200 major Barnes and Noble stores.)

Permalink Reply by Michael Petterson on September 15, 2011 at 1:02pm I also recieved the e-mail from Julie Owens. if someone could get onto replying to her quickly about it.
Dear Tom,
I think there are some inaccuracies in article in the first link. I looked up the original article http://www.nature.com/nature/journal/v476/n7361/full/nature10343.html and Professor Jyrki Kauppinen who is named as an author in the Chriss Street article you forwarded, is not listed as an author of the journal article. Have I missed something? I am aware that the actual lead author Kirkby has been widely quoted as saying that you cannot extrapolate their findings to make any conclusions about climate change and he has explained why several times.

Permalink Reply by Gordon Smith on September 15, 2011 at 8:27pm Hi Peter, I feel that I am banging my head against a dunny door trying to communicate with my MP,He is so arrogant and knows everything, he refuses to listen to any critics of his utopian Govt. Unfortunately he is in a relatively safe seat (Hunter NSW). I will continue to annoy him but I do not expect any success. I will be one of the 1st to congratulate him when he is either voted out or voted into opposition.

Hi Julene,
Is there a possibility to "shift" this discussion a little bit higher in the hierarchy of discussions?
So it can be seen by more people at once.

I couldn't more agree with that - but as far I can see there are no more than about 30 active members and there is a vast number of JG members (over 3000) "dormant".
How can we activate them also to make some letters to their MPs (or at least emails)?
I can see that emails to the Representative of our own electorate are the most efficient and meaningful once - that means we should motivate all members with ALP representatives to do something in that direction.
The discussion just started by Owen Carlton (We want an election ---now)
http://justgroundsonline.com/forum/topics/we-want-an-election-now goes in the same direction.
Fortunately my MP is Warren Truss NP) and I have him contacted already several
times in the past and I contacted all MPs already several times over the last 2 or 3 weeks with different emails and different approaches to make them aware that their interest should lie with their constituents and not with their party.
So please if your MP is a member of ALP - send him/her an email and your opinion clear about the carbon tax and ETS.
Thanks.
