Real People - facing the forgotten issues with friendship and a little fun.
It is obvious that some serious reading goes down in the west... OK but what about light reading? I'll start;
"And all our yesterdays" by Fleur Lehane.
Fleur has autographed this book (Family properties "Ray";"Terachy";"Pinkilla";Bunginderry";"Naretha" (originally part of "Pinkilla";"Yambutta";and "Tenham")

Hi Ian, I recently finished reading Life of Pi which is an international best seller by Yann Martel. Bit slow to start, but interesting tale (fiction) about an Indian boy who shares a lifeboat with a Bengal tiger after a ship wreck that claimed everybody else on board. Or did he? If anyone else has read it I would be interested on their opinion on that.
Meanwhile a merry Christmas to you too and your family.
Permalink Reply by Beverley Prescott on December 15, 2010 at 2:58pm I have heaps of books here to read "when I get around to it". I love books but don't get to read often enough.
The most recent one I have read though is a Memoir of Ahn Do.
Some of you will surely know him as a comedian. He is on TV on various things including Dancing with the Stars during one of the series.
He tells the story of how he and his family found their way to Australia in a very small boat. What an adventure and very scary. His father planned the escape from Vietnam during the war and gosh, it is really worth the read.
The book had me laughing, crying, fearing for them, and just admiring this fellow and his family. He really loves this country and keeps telling the reader throughout the book.
I love him all the more now - always thought he was a wag.
The one I plan to read next is "Eat, Pray, Love".
Yeah I like Ahn too Bev. Eat, Pray Love sounds a bit, ah, feminine for me (am I allowed to say that? the PC Police will be after me I guess :)
Hi all,
"Hearts of Stone" by Roger Crook! (Was ploughing my way through an old copy of "Anna Karenina" that I found on a bookshelf - however, very slow going. The Crook book is more the thing!!) Copies available care of Roger. (Just a little plug .... LOL.)
cheers,
Julene

I enjoyed A Fortunate Life
I actually have a few on the go. Charles Dickens Bleak House which we are reading in a readalong, there is also a Bible readalong which I host and I tend to dip into the Wind in the Willows too.
Julene, I literally couldn't put Anna Karenina down. I consider it a masterpiece. Roger's books are both very good.
John, I've heard good things of Life of Pi but haven't read it.
Beverley, I really enjoy memoirs and biographies- Ahn Do's saga sounds exceptional

Hi all,
Readers Digest - have been a subscriber for over 25 years, great info and stories Ian as you mentioned on
another thread.
Rock'n'Roll books, 'In Style' fashion magazine, gardening books.
Heart of the Amazon, Yossi Ghinsberg
The Kite Runner, Khaled Hosseini
War Paint, about the lives and rivalry of Elizabeth Arden & Helena Rubinstein
The Passion Test, Janet Bray Attwood & Chris Attwood, its about discovering your passions and creating the life you choose to live. Our passions are the loves of our lives - the things that are most deeply important to us, and they light us up just talking about them! and when you follow your passions you will love your life.
We're most likely doing the things we are good at, so loves and talents often go together.
None of these books are new releases.
Permalink Reply by Cate Stuart on December 16, 2010 at 12:30pm Yes Cate that sounds like heavy reading, I haven't read those books I listed recently either, some of them also 'heavy reading'.
But on a lighter note, my daughter bought me a book at a second-hand shop, its got a bright pink cover and called "My Gorgeous Life", Dame Edna Everage.
Part of the intro says:
"Dame Edna Everage: housewife, Megastar, investigative journalist, social anthropologist, children's book illustrator, diseuse, chanteuse, swami, monstre sacre and polymath - Dr. Everage is, arguably, the most popular and gifted woman in the world today. Her eminince in the British and Australian threatre is unchallenged."
Cate you are to be commended for doing what you can and are doing, and I reckon you are a 'bright tool', lol
Cheers Pam :)

What i would like to read, and what i get stuck with reading are two different things. I have not sat down and read for pleasure for literally years! How sad is that ! lol
At the moment, i am reading legislation/ information pertaining to EC areas / disaster areas/ MDBP - UN information, and law - the problem is this is all dangerous for me - as i am not the brightest tool in the shed - but, well, i try where i can! lol :)
Cheers Cate :)
Permalink Reply by Beverley Prescott on December 16, 2010 at 10:10pm I am damned sure Cate is a bright tool !!
I too don't get to read much, Cate. I actually made myself take time to read those I mentioned above.
I have so many books in this house - I LOVE books - however, I have read very few novels in my life - when one is busy raising a family, there is not much time for reading. I love all reading and would love to spend more time doing just that. However, I seem to always have things that need doing and reading just has to wait. It takes me all day to read the daily paper and the other local freebies that come. (That's because I keep doing other things in between the reading). I love to do the crosswords and some days I get to do them.
I thought I put something on here about another one I read called "Overboard" the stories the shipping companies don't want you to know. Must have bombed out somewhere with that the other night and it isin cyberspace!!!!
That was one I couldn't put down either - about real life problems on cruises - mentioned Diane Brimble and all true life happenings on board ships.
John, I don't know what Eat, Love, Pray is about - got it cheap at a book exchange type event.

Interesting to hear about Overboard.
Eat, Love, Pray has good reviews
Roger's book deserves to be made into a film.
I am typing out All the Tall Ships (my great grandfather) and then I want to make up a script for Flight to Australia
