Our TOMNET group was addressed by a USQ guy doing research into red deer around Cressbrook dam. Deer of all five species were released near Esk in the 1850's and are now prolific. Some people hunt them and enjoy the meat and some find they are a pest as they eat the ripening crops. I have no knowledge of any dietary problems with the venison.
Permalink Reply by Laurel V on June 7, 2011 at 10:19pm Hi Terry, yes I have been following the reports on CWD in the E;lk Moose and Deer pop in usa.
as they travel freely it should be of greater concern to USDA but it seems funding for just about everything serious is vanishing.
until a whole lot of ill animals and people become un ignorable.
but its easy to assume alzheimers for cause of death..and autopsies arent done.

"which includes the ___elimination___ of Prion activities ($5,473,000),"
All Other Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases CDC's FY 2012 request of $52,658,000 for all other emerging and zoonotic infectious disease activities is a decrease of $13,607,000 below the FY 2010 level, which includes the elimination of Prion activities ($5,473,000), a reduction for other cross-cutting infectious disease activities, and administrative savings. These funds support a range of critical emerging and zoonotic infectious disease programs such Lyme Disease, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, and Special Pathogens, as well as other activities described below.

That was unintentional teasing on my part. There is a brass plaque at Toogoolwah which documents the release of the deer. A school friend John McConnell lives at Mt Brisbane station and I have been very interested in the deer. They were from the King's herd in England. I can imagine that the deer in Sherwood forest were hunted for their delicious venison.
Many volunteers assist with the research. One guy who has hunted all 5 species Australia wide uses a dart arrow to sedate them and they are collared. A cheap collar is $500 and the expensive one with GPS date stored every 20 minutes for two years costs $thousands.
Australia is behind USA and Europe in research, well back!
Cheers,

How are you?
Early information from 3 of the red deer in the Esk basin suggests they are eating lantana and prickly pear which are both 'noxious plants'. If they are indeed eating these plants then they are probably doing a community service in keeping the pear under control. 3 collars were removed. One has stayed within 300 hectares, another 1000 hectares whilst at least one deer has moved away from the area for a couple of days and then returned? [source ABC radio ]

Q. What does the brain look like in Creutzfeldt-Jacob disease?
A. In CJD, brain tissue becomes vacuolated ("spongiform") and neurons shrink and eventually drop out entirely. In severe cases, the vacuoles coalesce to form cysts ("status spongiosus"). It's not clear how the abnormally-folded prion protein causes vacuolization.
check out the two RED cjd hot spots in TEXAS. the Texas CJD report is about half way down the report, after the USA report on human TSE ;
