It is a good song Stephen- one to rally the deflated spirit
All the Govt funded lefties, socialists and bludgers have all the power and unfortunately they seem intent of riding this country into the ground. Union bully boys and rapacious mega companies with huge monopolies reign unchecked here- most of the population don't care or stand for any thing and the few loonies like us get ostracized until we run out of oxygen.
Nothing will change here till the credit dries up and then everyone will wake up.

Permalink Reply by Dr Caroline Wright on August 18, 2012 at 2:04pm During the 1960's I think it was when we were voting on what would be our National Anthem there was a song which my husband named 'The Ampol Song' which had the most beautiful words to it about Australia. It was to the tune of Waltzing Matilda. Does anyone else remember this song? or where we could locate it?
Permalink Reply by Stephen Cox on August 18, 2012 at 2:23pm Obviously somewhere should be an old Ampol advert to jog our memories and Al many a Merc etc these days lives in Houso central should make you think who says crime doesn't pay.
Permalink Reply by Dr Caroline Wright on August 19, 2012 at 12:01pm It went something like this:
To the tune of Waltzing Matilda
'God bless Australian, Long live Australia
Land of our birth and the sky and the sea'
then it goes on to include something about '.....should threaten us....One for all, all for one'
When I have more time I will do a search of the internet to see what I can come up with.

Permalink Reply by Dr Caroline Wright on August 19, 2012 at 2:54pm Ian, Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU. I have now played it three times and each time I get goose bumps. I just love that song, the tune and the words (now that I have heard them again). Where did you find it? You are my man of the week!

This appears more fitting under the current regime.
Advanced Australia Fair
Updated Lyrics
Mark Weeks, Potts Point, N.S.W.
c. September 1996
Australians all, we've lost our voice,
For we are old and tired;
We've ceased our toil and sold our soil;
Our credit has expired.
We can't afford to pay our board,
And so we say this prayer
On bended knees. Will someone please
Advance Australia's fare.
Permalink Reply by Dr Caroline Wright on August 19, 2012 at 3:22pm Stephen my congratulation to you for starting this discussion site for Special Songs for Australians. My heart is very glad today listening to "Who will Stand for Australia' and 'God Bless Australia' two of my now favourite songs. Well done.
Fond regards
Caroline
Permalink Reply by Jan Courtney on August 19, 2012 at 3:52pm Wondering if anyone has the lyrics to :"They Call me The Old Sundowner" which we used to sing as children back in the 1940's.
We always sing God Bless Australia at our Australia Day mass, and also on Anzac Day.
I think it's beautiful
God Bless Australia was a proposed 1961 Australian national anthem by Australian songwriter Jack O'Hagan who provided patriotic lyrics to the traditional tune of Waltzing Matilda
Corporate sponsorship
The song was given airplay in cinema advertisements in Australia by Ampol, an Australian Petrol Company with a 45rpm record premium sold by the company.
Here in this God given land of ours, Australia
This proud possession, our own piece of earth
That was built by our fathers, who pioneered our heritage,
Here in Australia, the land of our birth.
REFRAIN
God bless Australia, Our land Australia,
Home of the Anzac, the strong and the free
It's our homeland, our own land,
To cherish for eternity,
God bless Australia, The land of the free.
Here in Australia, we treasure love and liberty,
Our way of life, all for one, one for all
We're a peace loving race, but should danger ever threaten us,
Let the world know we will answer the call
REFRAIN
Permalink Reply by Dr Caroline Wright on August 19, 2012 at 8:00pm Thank you Jan for including the words to 'God Bless Australia'. I was attempting to read them on lap-top as the song was playing but some I could not make out. Now I have been able to print them out so I can keep them.
