So here is what I have found today
Permalink Reply by Geoff Hutchesson on January 20, 2013 at 11:49am All very interesting Alyn,
But on having a browse through both posts, leave me wondering when the aliens are going to arrive.
Particularly the Georgia link.
Same old pithy arguments - "Spy and Fry" being the first giggle.
The hacking question has been gone into in great depth. If it could be hacked by a laptop and an antenna, it would also mean the readings could be changed, blocked or zeroed. This possibility has been seen due to early hacking of smart meters and taken into account ie. security has been addressed and ongoing.
Fry from smart meter emissions? While you're frying from your smart meter RF signal, you can ring your local politician on your mobile phone, and bath in the radiation from that and hundreds of radio, TV, data, wireless internet and two-way radio repeater towers. Don't forget those big microwave antennae dishes that are carrying thousand of telephone and data signals, that you see dotted around the country.
When you go to the gas station and fill up with fuel (energy), it shows the value on the pump, and the rate at which you get charged, similar to your smart meter.
If your smart meter is on "time of day" charging, it is no different to when you drive your vehicle and for what distance, ie. your choice.
What people do not understand, is that if willy-nilly consumption continued as population and industry increases, there would be more brown-outs and black-outs, due basically to overloading of the system.
Add to that the current green meme, of "no new coal power", and reliance on renewables. This is a lesson that Germany is learning the downside of now.
The alternative to rolling brown-out, and black-outs, would be as seen in parts of the old Soviet Union, where electricity was switched off to allow industry and essential service to operate.
That's controlled load !!

I am new to this industry in terms of information -- so I have not formed an opinion either way about any of it. The two links that I posted was a direct result of information passed to me via a third party with a US based position.
The only part I can confirm is that "Controlled" usage by Power Companies is indeed a real instrament that is being used this summer. Whether the control is to deliberately manipulate the Wholesale price -- I cannot say -- but it is feasable.
The UK position is this -; http://www.decc.gov.uk/en/content/cms/tackling/smart_meters/smart_m...
with a roll-out commencing in 2014

The big problem that I see in relation to Smart Meters is the association with Climate Change.
You look at what we have here in Australia at present, the Department of Climate Change and Energy Efficiency (DCC & EE). Straight away the average person (?) looks at it and responds with "I don't want any of this climate change crap, with smart meters telling me what to do."
It shows up here and on other sites, it is obvious that this is also just one of the objections in the US and in Europe. Then the presumed reasons or excuses against smart meters comes in - radiation from the wireless link, spying on the customer, fires caused by the smart meter, increased costs and a whole gamut of things which show up on many websites.
OK, just imagine what can be made of the fact that I use a computerised, data logging, multi-function, electronic multimeter, with Wi-fi linking to my computer or laptop - every day. It is just a tool, just as a smart meter is, and I don't have to make sacrifices to darker powers before I use it.
Under my computer monitor, I have a power monitor display, which shows my power use, the solar power energy input from the inverter, and calculate the difference. It is linked to the power by TWO (2x) radio links. This is because my Smart Meter is not completely smart, so I monitor the conditions. When I'm not Just Grounding or playing internet, I can sit and watch the graphs generated by power use - Boring.
Point illustrated, it is also a tool, as an adjunct to a Smart Meter.

This appears to be a data base listing, not really of any great interest unless your are following the market for equipment and software.
Sure there is going to be a lot of players, as it is a huge market.

Those 20 Questions and answers from Florida Power and Light seem to be in line with us in Australia.
They are quite logical questions and maybe should be read by everyone.
Privacy and power use is very well explained.
