Scurrilous attacks on Heartland Institute and Bob Carter

The Heartland Institute, a body that has been very successful in exposing the AGW hoax, is under attack from the blogs like Desmog; blogs whose raison d'etre is to try to besmear scientists and organisations that are revealing the truth of the hoax.

Heartland has issued this statement:

Heartland Institute responds to stolen and fake documents FEBRUARY 15, 2012 – The following statement from The Heartland Institute – a free-market think tank – may be used for attribution.
Yesterday afternoon, two advocacy groups posted online several documents they claimed were The Heartland Institute’s 2012 budget, fundraising, and strategy plans. Some of these documents were stolen from Heartland, at least one is a fake, and some may have been altered.
The stolen documents appear to have been written by Heartland’s president for a board meeting that took place on January 17. He was traveling at the time this story broke yesterday afternoon and still has not had the opportunity to read them all to see if they were altered. Therefore, the authenticity of those documents has not been confirmed. Since then, the documents have been widely reposted on the Internet, again with no effort to confirm their authenticity. One document, titled “Confidential Memo: 2012 Heartland Climate Strategy,” is a total fake apparently intended to defame and discredit The Heartland Institute. It was not written by anyone associated with The Heartland Institute. It does not express Heartland’s goals, plans, or tactics. It contains several obvious and gross misstatements of fact. We respectfully ask all activists, bloggers, and other journalists to immediately remove all of these documents and any quotations taken from them, especially the fake “climate strategy” memo and any quotations from the same, from their blogs, Web sites, and publications, and to publish retractions. The individuals who have commented so far on these documents did not wait for Heartland to confirm or deny the authenticity of the documents. We believe their actions constitute civil and possibly criminal offenses for which we plan to pursue charges and collect payment for damages, including damages to our reputation. We ask them in particular to immediately remove these documents and all statements about them from the blogs, Web sites, and publications, and to publish retractions. How did this happen? The stolen documents were obtained by an unknown person who fraudulently assumed the identity of a Heartland board member and persuaded a staff member here to “re-send” board materials to a new email address. Identity theft and computer fraud are criminal offenses subject to imprisonment. We intend to find this person and see him or her put in prison for these crimes.
Apologies: The Heartland Institute apologizes to the donors whose identities were revealed by this theft. We promise anonymity to many of our donors, and we realize that the major reason these documents were stolen and faked was to make it more difficult for donors to support our work. We also apologize to Heartland staff, directors, and our allies in the fight to bring sound science to the global warming debate, who have had their privacy violated and their integrity impugned. Lessons: Disagreement over the causes, consequences, and best policy responses to climate change runs deep. We understand that. But honest disagreement should never be used to justify the criminal acts and fraud that occurred in the past 24 hours.
As a matter of common decency and journalistic ethics, we ask everyone in the climate change debate to sit back and think about what just happened. Those persons who posted these documents and wrote about them before we had a chance to comment on their authenticity should be ashamed of their deeds, and their bad behavior should be taken into account when judging their credibility now and in the future.  The Heartland Institute is a 28-year-old national nonprofit organization with offices in Chicago, Illinois and Washington, DC. Its mission is to discover, develop, and promote free-market solutions to social and economic problems. For more information, visit our Web site at http://www.heartland.org

At the same time our own Professor Bob Carter is under attack for receiving some funds from Heartland. In the alarmist Fairfax press, Carter "did not deny he was being paid by The Heartland Institute, but would not confirm the amount, or if the think tank expected anything in return for its money."

"That suggestion is silly and offensive - a kindergarten level argument," Professor Carter told Fairfax.

Perhaps Ben Cubby would like to examine funding for blogs that try to blur the truth such as  DeSmog and Skeptical Science. Perhaps Ben Cubby would be interested in the peanuts that Heartland receives (2011 - $4.6M) compared with Warmist Alarmist organisations like Greenpeace US$300m, WWF $700m. Jo Nova's blog this morning has a lot about the extremes the alarmists are gettng up to. They are getting desperate. Obviously they will stop at nothing. More on the attacks on Heartland here too.

Crikey: Believers waiting for skeptics to die? We aren’t waiting for them to grow up

Believers in man-made-catastrophe can’t win over skeptics with evidence and reason. Instead the peak “believers” intellectual strategy is to hope the oldies might die off in time to save the planet: Death isn’t an option: climate change activists aren’t waiting for ....

It’s sexist, ageist, intolerant and illogical: just what we’ve come to expect from “progressives”, eh?

Pffft! I will back Bob Carter anyday of the week! Bring it it on!

I loved Bob's reply,

"That suggestion is silly and offensive - a kindergarten level argument," Professor Carter told Fairfax.

Looks like they are all grasping at straws to me, gee, wonder why they are so worried ~ people not as gullible as they once were, and the world is not going to self destruct?! What a surprise :)

Cheers Cate :)

The Anatomy of a Global Warming Smear

Just a little from the link:

The leading disseminator of the global warming hoax, The New York Times, published its version on Wednesday, February 15th, titled “Leak Offers Glimpse of Campaign Against Climate Science.”

The Times will continue to publish lies about global warming, as will others like Time and Newsweek magazines. The attacks on Heartland and the many scientists and others like myself who debunk this fraud will continue, but their efforts are just the dying gasp of the greatest hoax of the modern era.

There’s a reason the theme of Heartland’s sixth conference in 2011 was “Restoring the Scientific Method.” Real science does not depend on declaring “a consensus” before the hypothesis has been thoroughly tested, a process that often involves years of effort. Meanwhile, the planet continues to cool.

This is tipical of the Australian Media,  taking everything out of context, I wonder if the journalists would work without pay?  Bob Carter has as much right to earn a living as any one else.  I'm with Cate on this one I would back Bob Carter anyday

When you consider the big kick in the ribs that was given to the AGW lobby in Germany in the last couple of weeks, that started out with the release of "The Cold Sun", it's no wonder that WWF and Greenpeace are going to get very narky, and are attacking any sceptical organisations, such as Climate Change section of Heartland.

Heartland has been subject to attacks from climate change alarmists (Real Climate, De  Smog Blog) and various arms of government such as NASA G.I.S.S. since at least the conferences of the Non Governmental International Panel on Climate Change (NIPCC) hosted by Heartland over the last few years.

These warmist NGO's have recently seen Canada slip away and are fighting the loss of billions of Canadian dollars to the UN with vicious campaigns to damage Canada financially by pressure to stop further development of the Alberta oil sands fields and other pressures to stop any drilling for oil/gas in the near fields of the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas. These campaigns are being funded by large US "philanthropic" organisations.

With funding of warmists in 2008 of :

Greenpeace - $277.4million AUD

WWF - $91.7million AUD

not all of these figures are for climate related - but

by end 2009 - the US government spent $79billion USD on climate change research and technology, therefore funding the gravy train of carbon hysteria.

And in Australia:

2009 - Australian Dept of Climate Change turned over estimated $80milion AUD

- if it could be proven without any doubt that CO2 is having only a minor affect on climate, and that what is being seen and measured is of only natural variations, can you see that all these organisations would pack up, go home and get real jobs?

Not likely.

The great strength of those, like heartland, who have argued against those who promote AGW, is that, by and large, those who have argued against have stuck to their science and continued to promote their science and expose the fraud of those who have brought 'science' into disrepute by publishing and promoting lies and falsehoods in an effort to convince the world that global warming is taking place and that man is to blame, so we MUST change.

The greatest danger as I see it in spending a lot of time in responding to the 'stolen' papers, is that is just what the 'thieves' want to happen. It will then divert 'Heartland' from their main objective where they are making rapid gains.

The problem is that Greenpeace and WWF are not accountable for the public money they spend and on what they spend it on.

Perhaps they should be asked to provide the scientific evidence before they gain approval to spend the money? It should not be too hard to put together a board charged with the task of determining if the 'science is settled'.

So lets get this right. If you lie, cheat, manipulate, deceive, misconstrue, bully, intimidate, slander other scientists name ~ these actions have a really big fat pay cheque for doing so (read govt bidding)

However, if you believe in scientific fact, not deceiving, truthfulness, not intimidating, sound ground truthed data, informing the public on what is fact and what is not fact, and do not slander others, then one is only entitled to a little bit more than the unemployment benefit as given as an example above.

Oh, i get it, keep the good people poor and in their box unable to get across the country or world (or at least try to reduce their capacity to do so) while encouraging skulduggery from less than ethical "other" scientists - yep, sounds like a Gillard Government to me at work behind the scenes with the real Prime Minister and his supporters in the multi million dollar  green groups (oh no - not money!!!) backing this campaign.

Yep, your right - nothing has changed ...yet until we have an election and voters put an end to this disease called "stretching the truth" - and taxing the billiow out of  us all for no gain and for "the good of the environment"...here we go again...

You all right Cate, or just a bit slow today? You got it in the end though!

Wonder when it started, that is, giving money to people who are going to politically oppose you if you are not on the Left? Hope its not some UN Charter 'we' (the Royal kind) signed up to. That will take us off on another ice flow with an endangered Polar Bear.

Did I read correctly the other day in a letter from Pickering (Still have his naked series of cartoons, wish he would do another set) that Big Ears Billy and Holt had three, that is one, two, three, as media advisers and with the PM it runs into a couple of hundred? Now get rid of a few of them and we would be back into surplus.

Watched Bill Shorten flounder like, or should that be 'loike' only a Flounder can Flounder.

No mate, I got it - when it first broke - :) But just wanted to post a different "Cate speak" and bump this discussion of Geoff's up.

Its all happening out in cyber space again  - especially on Jp Npva's site - Ross Brisbane is over there of course - lol - Flak Jackets and Helmets again! lol :)

Cheers Cate

Oh yep, re Pickering - er...very interesting one with the PM and her hand on an appendage that  does not belong to females..")!!!

You have just got to love this GREAT cartoon - a picture is worth a thousand words - even more so when it is so accurate!

Thanks to Jo Nova for this -
