For Like minded people who like to see-
This discussion was motivated by a program that was prepared for television but never went to air about a planned terrorist attack on the Melbourne Cricket Ground during an AFL Final Game. Fortunately the AFP intervened to prevent the attack. The program stated that one of the two terrorists had received over $1,000,000 in Social Service Benefits during the years he was in Australia planning this attack.
I was updating my profile page and thought the 'LEAVE' Box meant leave page and not leave Just Grounds altogether. Lost everything to date on this discussion and apologise to all those who have contributed to the discussion. So I have rejoined and we will continue this discussion here. I have (earlier today when responses to this discussion were approximately at 350+) posed the question if we should look at fast-tracking the release of ? under-aged boat smugglers as proposed by the visiting Indonesian Leader?

Permalink Reply by vivienne skeen on July 26, 2012 at 11:31am Absurd. Our navy is not only running a taxi service to Christmas Island, but working as Indonesia’s coat guard:
Indonesian rescue authorities say they are powerless to help a boat full of asylum seekers adrift at sea off Bali’s coast.
The boat, which sent out a distress call to Australian authorities yesterday morning, is taking on water in Indonesia’s search and rescue zone.
The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) said a boat carrying about 60 people was stranded north-west of Bali, near the Indonesian island of Madura.
Permalink Reply by Dr Caroline Wright on July 26, 2012 at 2:29pm It is not until you see the map in your like Vivienne and where the boat actually is that the ridiculousness of this whole situation becomes apparent. Thanks for all those links Vivienne.

Permalink Reply by vivienne skeen on July 26, 2012 at 5:28pm Update on the boat off Bali, the Indonesians found the boat and towed it back to shore.
Prime Minister Julia Gillard claims it can’t be done:
The Leader of the Opposition has been going around the country thumping his chest about how if he was prime minister he would tow boats back to Indonesia
How many lives of Navy officers would he be prepared to lose if he was prime minister?
Greens leader Christine Milne agrees it can’t be done:
What Tony Abbott is exposing is not a debate about saving lives for the Coalition, it is absolutely a debate about not only jeopardising lives with his ‘turn back the boats’ inhumane policy, but it will seriously undermine our relationship with Indonesia.
Home Affairs Minister Jason Clare agrees it can’t be done:
What Mr Abbott is doing here is effectively playing Russian roulette with the lives of Australian sailors.
Labor’s media groupies it can’t be done:
We must hope Tony Abbott is lying when he says he will turn back the boats. If he is not lying and actually means it, he is ignorant, foolish and reckless… As every expert on the subject has painstakingly pointed out, the people smugglers have wised up. They have shown they are willing to destroy a refugee boat to prevent it being sent back, at whatever cost in life and limb.
“Human rights” activists such as Greg Barns agree it can’t be done:
[Abbott] knows if you turn back boats, most of which are leaky, unseaworthy crafts under Australian law, there is a high likelihood of people drowning once the navy leaves. It is state-sanctioned murder.
But Indonesia today shows “everyone” is wrong:
Indonesian authorities have found a boat carrying about 60 asylum seekers that had broken down and started taking on water while on its way to Australia....It is being towed to a port in Surabaya, in East Java.
Those aboard the boat also contacted the ABC overnight, saying they wanted to go to Australia and expressing concern that Indonesian search and rescue authorities were trying to locate them.
No wonder they were concerned. The Gillard Government has turned our navy into a taxi service, lying that there’s no way boats can be turned around or their passengers carrred back to where they came from.
What’s her excuse now that Indonesia shows they can?
Permalink Reply by Dennis "DARBY" Brierley on July 26, 2012 at 6:48pm if they can do it with one then they should be able to do it to all.
my next question, how long before this boat appears on the south side of indonesia heading our way and calling in a distress call?
Permalink Reply by Jan Courtney on July 27, 2012 at 7:58am Asylum seeker's Aussie-only SOS plea
ASYLUM seekers on a crippled boat tried a new tactic to reach Australia yesterday - asking an ABC reporter to send help from Australia.
But their request backfired when the ABC correspondent sent Indonesian rescue authorities to the aid of the boat, just a short distance off Bali at the time.
The passengers protested, saying they wanted to be rescued only by Australian authorities. But last night they were taken to an Indonesian island against their wishes.

Permalink Reply by Dennis "DARBY" Brierley on July 27, 2012 at 12:49pm reading further down that report Jen i found this
" Refugee advocate Ian Rintoul claimed Australia should have gone to the aid of the passengers despite their very close proximity to Indonesia.
"It will be a complete disaster for the asylum seekers because they will be indefinitely detained in appalling conditions in Indonesia," Mr Rintoul said. "
and this is what is pressuring the govt. into making the decisions it does.
why the hell should australia have gone to the rescue of these people?

Permalink Reply by Dr Caroline Wright on July 27, 2012 at 7:24pm I heard on the ABC1 News tonight that there is outrage about under-aged crew members on boats being detained in Adult Correctional Facilities. Apparently Australia has another diagnostic method to better assess the actual age of smuggler's crew members.
What was of interest was the fact that they wore hoods and masks when being interviewed in Indonesia. Was this to protect their privacy from us or from the Indonesians?

Permalink Reply by Dr Caroline Wright on July 30, 2012 at 2:09pm This article points out some errors in the comparison between Aged Pensioner benefits and the benefits received by illegal immigrants but then goes on to say that the actual truth of the situation is much worse. After 4 years in this country only about 25 percent of asylum seekers are employed.

At last we have some statistics to inform the Australian public.
Permalink Reply by Jan Courtney on July 30, 2012 at 3:23pm Caroline's Brisbane Times article quoted above, also states:
"Under intense political pressure, the federal government is emptying the detention centres by issuing bridging visas which allow detainees to enter the community, work, and receive welfare benefits before their final status has been determined. This has slashed the average time spent in detention from nine months to three months but the quicker turnover has compressed the scrutiny process.
Some of the high take-up of welfare payments among asylum seekers and refugees is being recycled into bringing relatives to Australia, including via people smugglers.
The Royal Australian Navy is being used as a pick-up service by people smugglers who call navy vessels to advise them of their need for assistance."
Can you imagine an Australian requiring a pension or sickness benefit etc, having it granted before their eligibility status had been established/reviewed ?
Permalink Reply by Dr Caroline Wright on July 30, 2012 at 3:31pm To answer your question Jan ... No I can not. Meanwhile two more boats arrived on the weekend and we already have the highest refugee arrivals in any one year on record and it is only July.
