This discussion was motivated by a program that was prepared for television but never went to air about a planned terrorist attack on the Melbourne Cricket Ground during an AFL Final Game. Fortunately the AFP intervened to prevent the attack. The program stated that one of the two terrorists had received over $1,000,000 in Social Service Benefits during the years he was in Australia planning this attack.

I was updating my profile page and thought the 'LEAVE' Box meant leave page and not leave Just Grounds altogether. Lost everything to date on this discussion and apologise to all those who have contributed to the discussion. So I have rejoined and we will continue this discussion here. I have (earlier today when responses to this discussion were approximately at 350+) posed the question if we should look at fast-tracking the release of ? under-aged boat smugglers as proposed by the visiting Indonesian Leader?

Would the term multi-racial or multi-ethnic society be a better description for Australian Society? Let us remember that in countries where there is a clash of two cultures (be they religious or tribal) there is war!!

We do not want multiple cultures because we will not be Australian anymore. "We are one but we are many" implies that we cannot be multiple cultures because we would no longer be ONE which is Australian. Stephen is right in his assessment above and I have been thinking about it and thought I would push the issue for some discussion.

He is from one culture (religious) which he brought with him as a refugee and certainly has not adopted the values and ideals of our Australian culture. I would not be disappointed if he stayed in jail for some time and hope that he has no access to internet facilities.

This is an excellent example of what Stephen, Beverley and I have posted above.

Thanks Beverley. I read it a few times and was not quite sure what her position was on this issue. This may be because of her mixed heritage and the fact that she is living in the USA.... So I read the comments and many of them also seemed to have the same problem that I did. There was more discussion about white people adopting black children in the comments rather than seeking clarification on the issue of race v culture.

In Australia if we were to speak in a derogatory way about someone from another race we would be racist.... not 'culturalist' (which is a new word I made up to fit the situation)'! Therefore Australia is/has a culture made up of many races who are able to add to our establish culture but are able and willing to adopt our culture.

Also an Indonesian fisherman accused of people smuggling pleads innocent in SA Court as he thought that he was simply driving a boat with people on it to another island.....Yes! Australia!

At Pontville in Tasmania there are talks about the possibility of using the Detention Centre there again for illegal immigrants. From my reading it sounds more like a Vacation Centre for illegals.

It is interesting to note that Chris Bowen may entertain the notion of adopting the LNP's immigration policy if a deal can not be struck with the Greens and the Independents. Is it possible that the Labor Party is 'running scared' on this issue and afraid of an elector 'back-lash'?

It will be of interest to see what The Australian has called an expert panel on asylum seekers actually comes up with. If it involves any off-shore processing the Greens will not back it. If it involves Malaysia the Liberal National Party will not back it because of the finding of the High Court of Australia. So what was it all for one may reasonably ask?

Yes I heard Bowen say that and for once he is quite right, a gut full is exactly what we have had.

However, we are going to hear this blame shifting, unedifying game from now until the election. The coalition is not going to take the slightest notice of the findings of the Committee set up by Gillard, to be handed down this week.

The High Court made a judgement, no Malaysia...and that's that, no matter what the findings are, the coalition will not agree unless they find that Nauru is the best option, in which case the Government won't agree. And there we will be back to square one unless Gillard backs down, has she ever?

Meanwhile while all this is going on another boat arrival carrying 30+ people. With tongue in cheek I would like to say that it is not know who towed whom to Christmas island what with the cracks in navy vessels and all!!
