IS AUSTRALIA ADEQUATELY PROTECTED FROM FOREIGN AND DOMESTIC INVASION ?

The Chinese today have shown their military might for all the world to see. Australia has seen a reduction in Defense spending since the USA began placing troops in the top-end. The USA has made it known that they are displeased with Australia's reduction on Defense spending as they need our assistance in patrolling the seas north of us.

Furthermore, the Australian Navy and Air Force is heavily involved in the role prescribed by the Government with regard to illegal entry of refugees by boats from Indonesia which is further depleting our ability to police the waters surrounding Australia.

So I ask the question "Are we Protected"?

Kind regards

Caroline the Military has never trusted the Political class especially Labor maybe you noticed the sale of various Military housing estates overn the last couple of decades such as Holsworthy.

The Military brass are not fools, because the Army,Navy,Air Force actually have title to these properties they can and do sell them at times,Now why would they do that and then Guarantee to rent them back for a minimum 10 years.

Quite clever really because when the Military have to apply for funding they have to bring into the loop various Beaurocrats and Government Ministers as to what they are spending the money on,Unless!!! they have their own funds to spend without needing Government interference or Beaurocratic bumbling to bring it all unstuck.

Trust me our Military are more capable than you may think,And our US Allies have too much to loose to not come to the defence of Australia because of it's Strategic position regarding both Asia and the Middle East among other reasons to safeguard this country.

Thanks Jan as I found it a very comprehensive and informative article.

Kind regards

Caroline

Interesting Article though somewhat dated or the Author did not actually do the research,The Hydrofoils built in Hobart have already seen service with the US marines,As well as service as ferry's in Europe,Problem is they cannot get Welders who want to work on them building them.Seems the younger generation think in many cases manual labour is beneath them even though the Pay rates are excellant.

Funding has always been an issue in the Defence department whenever we elect a Labor Government,Back in the early eighties the estimated cost for training an Airforce Pilot was roughly one million and when Paul keating took control a large number of young highly skilled RAAF pilots left the Air Force mainly because they got to fly a desk more than an Aircraft.

The Hercules Gunship scenario is so old that the Journalist referred to,In Vietnam there were two variations of that theme and they were very sucessfull,One based on the WW2 era Douglas DC3 was known as "Puff The Magic Dragon",The Hercules variant was known as the "Spectre Gunship" both extremely impressive when it came to firepower against massed Troops and extremely effective.

The purchase of Abrahms Tanks was a total stuffup as they are too wide and too heavy for many of Australia's Bridges and will not be Train Transportable either due to size constraints,At least they are "MultiFuel" so will run on Fuel that can be shared between Helicopters,Jets,Trucks and Tanks alike that is smart logistically.

Another Labor screwup like the Collins class Submarines that are not that old but already slated for replacement. They required extensive modifications as they were too noisy and performed poorly,In fact they were inferior to the much older English built Oberon Class subs they replaced.

One only of our old Diesel Electric "O" Boats was the first to launch a particular modern XXXX Missile and during exercises of Hawaii was responsible in War games for sinking a whole US Fleet,Our older subs were very stealthy compared to Nuclear subs which are very noisy.

Under water Sonar actually picks up the Hum from the electric power on board other subs let alone the Skimmers (surface Ships) and because the Russians used to use electricity at a frequency of 60 hertz and Ours ,The British and non Nuclear American Subs used Electricity at 50 Hertz they can tell whose Sub is nearby by the Hum of the Electrical circuits.

There is a lot more detail and intricacy involved in the Defence game than most realise and we are not as Defenceless as some in the Media may think,Though we certainly need to increase numbers even if only by having a variation of the United States National Guard as our Reserves as you can imagine are poorly represented when the permanant forces are under staffed and under funded.Israeli style compulsory Military Service would do wonders for many of our younger generation as far as attitude and skillsets and self dicipline goes.

Interesting information about the submarines Stephen.

It would probably be fought by the Civil Libitarians but I think that Week-end Reserve Training would be a good thing for those between 18 and 25 years who have been unemployed for over six months and are receiving Unemployment Benefits and not enrolled in New Start. What do you think?

Fond regards

Caroline

There are many Countries where Military Service is compulsory such as Greece.Switzerland and of course because of the nature of where they live Israel.

Many of the younger Greek imigrants in Australia are that simply to avoid their commitments in that area,If they visit "Home" they are in trouble for avoiding that commitment.

Personally whilst compulsory Military service is good for some I think there should be that along with other options of service to the Country,But I think  many of the younger generation as well as the country would benefit from some form of civil service as they would gain in so many ways.

Benefits would accrue from interaction with older mentors,The learning of many new skills in a different enviroment from what they may have chosen under differing circumstances.

The most important thing though would be an appreciation of their Country as they would for instance in say rejuvenating Wetlands or maintaining Civic infrastructure actually appreciate their own input into something and therefore gain something of a vested interest and pride in keeping it that way instead of allowing others to trash such edifices.

Younger Aboriginals already in Northern Australia have benefited greatly with the advent of NorForce and see it as something great to aspire towards to gain membership of that group entrusted with the protection of our Northern Coastline and hundreds of thousands of square kilometres of Northern Australia.

This unique Division of our Military instills great pride in it's members as well as local communities and the example is a wonderfull example of how we should approach many of the issues of our fellow Australians of Aboriginal or Torres strait background,Not the examples as shown by the so called Aboriginal "Tent Embassy" or the criminal actions that often issue from the Block at Redfern.

Genuine Aboriginals relate to the land in a way few others do and are a natural for  areas such as Park Rangers,NorForce or on Local councils as qualified and expert locals when it comes to real enviromental issues an area sadly hijacked by the Extreme Left these days .

Not just under the Guise of so called "Climate Change" let alone the International Hijacking of our Rights and in Truth Responsibilities as Australians in a Free and Soverign Country of Self Determination.

In that area we have to be extremely wary of many NGO's who under UN grooming have gone far beyond Moral and Legal precedents of what they should be able to do.

Everyone focuses on things such as Coal Seam Gas and overseas miners as they should but Councils and NGO's are the "Hidden Fifth Colunm" enemy to take note of.

Defence takes many forms other than the obvious Military aspect for it includes Food Security,Things such as overseas companies like Shell and Caltex closing Vital infrastructure like the Refinerey closures announced recently what do we do even if we source our fuels from a "Friendly" country if an Agressor either Blocades or sinks the Tankers bringing our Fuel.

Australia has the ability to open capped oil wells in Victoria and refine our own Fuel but only if we keep refineries in this country,With an increasing population and many more reliant on Vehicles for all aspects of life and in truth survival think about the last thirty or so years,How many Fuel Service stations have been closed down,How many Food outlets have been wiped out by Coles and Woolworths.

If suddenly we were to experience War panicked people would wipe out supplies necessary to either Survive or Flee to safer areas simply because we have centralised control and availability into areas where it will cause major issues when under Duress,Smaller independent supply depots are in truth a Military asset for Defence purposes even though in peacetime we see them simply as Service Stations or Shopping Centres.

Some links of Interest regarding the behemoth of China and it's increasingly agressive expansion regarding disputed territories and we must remember they are also actively courting Fiji,PNG and other South Pacific Regional Governments as well,This is why in many ways the US has come to an egreement with the Australian government to station a Contingent of United States Marines in the Territory.

Things have been hotting up bit by bit for some years now,.but Certain Influential Chinese Generals have been Posturing a lot lately and we must not forget that is exactly how Japan Evolved into WW2 through the Military taking Political Power through weak Politicians,A situation likely well entrenched already within Chinese Communist Governance.

Stuff like this certainly puts more of a current perspective on the foolishness of allowing Australia to rely on Imported Fuel and Food as well,A how a wary approach should be taken to any Chinese involvement in Our recource sectors.

Great comment Stephen

I'm a Navy man from  the Korean War and this is my evidence of first hand experience. The first and foremost advantage for any military type of training is that the young suddenly find they are not alone and bond to each other, and ultimately to the Nation. It is  the ground work of values. It sets a natural pride of belonging that does not exist in the Middle East as an example. We have values that are clearly visible and made this Nation great ever since WW1 and the envy of much of the World .... the asylum seekers et al.

But politicians see only themselves, their Party and their tenure. It should never have happened that we ship out 5 million tonnes of LNG for peanuts along with the mineral ores instead of putting part of each of them together to make the steel here. The corrupt morality of politicians serving their own interests angers me to the extent that all political applicants as Custodians of the Nation should submit to the same inquisition as a CO of a public listed company. More so, if one considers the responsibility to the shareholders. Much of what has occurred in governance these past 5 years would have seen the perpetrators in gaol.

Its futile even considering we fight the Chinese. They don't need the human waves of Korea anymore. Simply 5 nuclear missiles on 5 major cities (Not even considering Hobart or Darwin here) and 90% of the population and industry and infrastructure is gone. By the time their troops landed the rest would have given up because there would be no electricity or food or fuel or communications for the survivors in the country. I might also point out that because of JOHN HOWARD the country people also have few guns and next to no ammo either. Gympie has one shop that sells guns, Kingaroy might still have one. I don't think Murgon or Nanango has any, nor Kilkivan or Goomeri. So with what would survivors fight with?

I think we could trash the Indonesians who are about the only large nation that is close enough to us and might want to try it. The East Timorese killed 20,000 Indonesian troops in 25 years with little more than bows and arrows. I am sure we could do better and as the Indonesians have no nukes they have to fight ALL of us. Besides it a big horrible desert out there in the outback. Not like the lush lands of Java or Sumatra.

India could be a problem as they have nukes but why would they attack us? They haven't even finished off the Pakistanis after all these years and provocations. Perhaps being mainly hindu they prefer to run our call centres and immigrate to Sydney. We could just become an Indian colony.

I can't see any reason we would have to fight any of the small SE asian nations.

So who are the foreigners invading Australia?

Martin they dont have to invade anything when they can buy it for a knockdown price after installing their puppets.

All the above discussion may be so but what would Australia do if China or Korea began to invade the islands to our north ... the smaller islands that are unable to defend themselves.

It was an easy takeover by Japan in WW2.

A proposal for future development of Australian Defense Forces.
