IS AUSTRALIA ADEQUATELY PROTECTED FROM FOREIGN AND DOMESTIC INVASION ?

The Chinese today have shown their military might for all the world to see. Australia has seen a reduction in Defense spending since the USA began placing troops in the top-end. The USA has made it known that they are displeased with Australia's reduction on Defense spending as they need our assistance in patrolling the seas north of us.

Furthermore, the Australian Navy and Air Force is heavily involved in the role prescribed by the Government with regard to illegal entry of refugees by boats from Indonesia which is further depleting our ability to police the waters surrounding Australia.

So I ask the question "Are we Protected"?

Kind regards

Caroline

My sentiments exactly Merv. I was going to say more but it would be redundant.

Nice sentiments guys but really just a dead end,It is not just leaders that start Wars wars are often driven from the actions of ordinary people whith Ego issues.

The so called Bikie wars in Australia are really turf wars between various Middle Eastern Drug syndicates and often it is some young "Nom" who starts things going bad and the Leaders who calm things down usually by back room dealings that cost others but not the various leaders.

Gee sounds like International Politics,Whether a war erupts or Not Leaders only seem to look after themselves at the expense of the little guy but often it only takes one little guy to actually start the War witness the Assasination of Archduke Ferdinand that started World War One,For that singular incident was the work of an average person,You can argue that the Archduke was not an average person but in truth He was not responsible for the War but his death.

In that instance it has much in Common with the war against Islamists for it was Islamists that attacked the twin Towers not so called "radical Islam",There is only Islam and those who follow it's Dictates for it does Dictate not Suggest to those who follow the creed.

As Stephen predicted some time back that USA troops stationed in top end may have a correlation with Japanese/Chinese disputes regarding some of the smaller island in that area does indeed seem to be the case.

......Both countries claim the uninhabited inlands in the East China Sea, which are known as Senkaku in Japan and Diaoyu China.

One of the activists - Tokyo politician Eiji Kosaka - told reporters the group had always intended to land on the islands despite being forbidden to do so by the Japanese government.

"We want to give a strong signal to China," he said.

Another Japanese politician travelling with the flotilla said the trip was intended to demonstrate Japanese ownership of the islands.

"I want to show the international community that these islands are ours. It is Japan's future at stake," he said........

....As well as South Korea and Japan:

Japan made the proposal amid simmering tensions between Tokyo and Seoul, which intensified after President Lee Myung Bak's visit to the islands last week.

South Korea, which calls the islands 'Dokdo', claims they are clearly an integral part of South Korea's territory historically and geographically and argues that there is no territorial dispute....

Taiwan's drill will take place on Taiping Island in the Spratlys, a sprawling group of islands claimed in whole or part by Taiwan, China, Vietnam, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Brunei.

The drill on the island, the biggest in the Spratlys, involves newly arrived 40mm artillery and 120mm mortars and will be watched by several lawmakers reports the Taipei based United Evening News....

Also between India and China:

A proposal for a Chinese hydropower project is threatening to derail relations between India and China.

There are fears in India that the project, involving a 38,000-megawatt dam near the "Great Bend" of the Yarlung-Zangbo-Brahmaputra, may potentially reduce the volume of water flowing into India and Bangladesh.

Author of new book "Earth Wars: The Battle for Global Resources", Geoff Hiscock, told Radio Australia's Connect Asiaprogram that China and India need to negotiate a water treaty before its too late.

"Both China and India suffer from water scarcity - water quality is also a very big issue for the two countries."

"Anything that could affect the water flow in a river of such importance as the Brahmaputra to India is very significant."....

We may very well need to increase out Armed Forces Budget as who knows what the future will hold!!

For your interest, what some other parts of the world are using as combat aircraft:

(This is from an American source.)

Russian Sukhoi SU-30MK fighter

-

There are variants of this aircraft. The Chinese have a version that uses a Chinese engines and their own various elecronic platforms. India builds versions under license for their airforce as well as supply to other markets.

The red smoke coming from the wing tips is only there to demonstrate to spectators on the ground the direction the plane is actually moving through the air. Normally the smoke wouldn't be there. When the smoke is streaming behind, the airplane is moving fast forward etc. When the airplane is engulfed in smoke, it means the airplane is almost stopped in mid-air. The manoeuvrability of this plane is incredible.
This plane would be nearly impossible to defeat in a dogfight.

Russia now has #1 fighter plane in the world... SU-30-Vectored Thrust with Canards.

(Vectored Thrust is the ability to change the output configuration of the engines jet exhaust - ie. the exhausts can be swivelled, to change the direction of thrust )

As you watch this airplane, look at the canards moving along side of, and just below the canopy rail. The "canards" are the small wings forward of the main wings? The smoke and contrails provide a sense of the actual flight path, sometimes in reverse direction.

This video is of an in-flight demonstration flown by the Russian's-30MK Fighter aircraft. You will not believe what you are about to see.

The fighter can stall from high speed, stopping forward motion in seconds (full stall). Then it demonstrates an ability to descend tail first without causing a compressor stall.

It can also recover from a flat spin in less than a minute. These manoeuvres capabilities don't exist in any other aircraft in the world today.

We don't know which nations will soon be flying the SU-30MK, hopefully China and Israel won't be one of them. (recently it has been seen as a possibility that Indonesia may purchase some at $40m-USD each.)

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Note: Friends worked with advanced aircraft flight control systems and concepts for many years as an extension of stability control and means of Control...

Canards and vectored thrust were among many concepts examined to extend our fighter aircraft performance. Neither our current or next generation aircraft now poised for funding & production can in any way match the performance of this Russian aircraft NOW FLYING in any near combat situation.

Somehow the bankrupt Russian aircraft industry has out produced our complex politically tainted aerospace industry with this technology marvel. Scratch any ideas of close in air-to-air combat with this aircraft in the future.

Take a look at the video with the sound up. This aircraft is of concern to U.S and NATO planners. Maximize your screen for best viewing.

Jeff what an amazing aeroplane. Does the US produce anything with the same capability? How far could one of those plane travel before needed to refuel?

Caroline even though during the 50's 60's and 70's China and Vietnam were working together  since then there has been a two year War between Vietnam and China though virtually unreported and Vietnam in a Conventional war whipped China's Tush.

Since then the Vietnamese who among it seems just about everybody else also claim sections of the Paracell Islands and Hainan Islands have lately been agressively deploying Fighter Jets in Flyover missions to goad the Chinese regarding just who owns what.

China despite much provacation has yet to slap the annoying Mosquito's that surround her and may well be taking advantage of the Focus being on something they consider being a mere distraction,One they may well be gratefull for as they attempt to bring control to the Southern section of Sudan and Namibia and elsewhere in North Eastern Africa to aid their rapacious appetite for raw materials.

Hi Caroline,

From that report with the video, it appears that the west, meaning US aircraft manufacturers, do not have anything with those capabilities even on the drawing board.

As far as refueling, it is achieved in much the same way as present fighter aircraft, by using tanker aircraft, with hoses that can be attached and detached in flight, the same as our FA-18s do at present.

Cheers

Jeff

Jeff I thought that would be how they refueled. The fuel tanker might have a problem keeping up with them 'though in the air.

A complete history is available here dating way, way back for anyone interested in our near neighbours and the escalating tension in east Asia regarding ownership of the islands in the region.

Hi Caroline,

I have seen a video of refueling of two fighters at 500 miles an hour. ' Something else.

Cheers

Jeff
