For Like minded people who like to see-
The Chinese today have shown their military might for all the world to see. Australia has seen a reduction in Defense spending since the USA began placing troops in the top-end. The USA has made it known that they are displeased with Australia's reduction on Defense spending as they need our assistance in patrolling the seas north of us.
Furthermore, the Australian Navy and Air Force is heavily involved in the role prescribed by the Government with regard to illegal entry of refugees by boats from Indonesia which is further depleting our ability to police the waters surrounding Australia.
So I ask the question "Are we Protected"?
Kind regards
Caroline

as for relying on the US if they got busy in another conflict elsewhere it`s pretty hard to see them cutting down their own resources to save our necks, so my answer to the posted question are we adequately prepared for an invasion, NO.
Permalink Reply by Martin Essenberg on July 31, 2012 at 7:13pm China has had several thousand years to occupy SE asia. They traded around the area but seemed more intent on saving themselves from the Mongols than occupying the world.
If however China invades the islands to our north we should probably consider moving to New Zealand.
I don't think North Korea has the resources to invade anyone as they cannot feed their own people.

All the above discussion may be so but what would Australia do if China or Korea began to invade the islands to our north ... the smaller islands that are unable to defend themselves.
It was an easy takeover by Japan in WW2.

Permalink Reply by Stephen Cox on August 3, 2012 at 11:32pm Denise that Photo is filled with Leopard Tanks which are well and truly Obsolete and M113 APC's My God I did not think we had any left after Vietnam except in Museums.Place Kapooka most likely.
Real Problem in years past was our Armoured Corps generally only fired two live rounds of Main gun Ammunition per Leopard tank a year,Obviously with deployments in recent years our troops are much more effective as the training is only too real so to speak with daily Live Fire exercises.
Those are Old Mothballed Units and certainly not disposed in any way effectively as frontline fighting units as the Dispersal of effective fighting Vehicles would mean they were in Revetments spaced well clear of each other for minimising damage from Missile or Air Strikes.
Many forget one of the most effective means of defence Australia has is actually Australia,Would be interesting to see how long troops from Tropical asian Countries would handle Inland Australia,Very different country to what they are used to except in some of the higher areas that in places seemed almost Australian in a Bush sense,Well at least in Vietnam and parts of Laos.
Then of course we always have our secret weapons,The Aussie Westie,Bogan or Yobbo,The Footie fan,A day locked in Conference with most of our Politicians.Of course almost forgot any Invader would have to deal with a Demarkation Dispute with the Wharfies,Or heaven forbid if they targeted Victoria first it well could be the "Painters and Dockers",God help any foreign Troops caught in a crossfire among Aussie Street Drug Lords they wouldn't have a chance Cause nowhere is safe the bastards can't shoot straight so there is nowhere safe to take cover.

Anyone who thinks it is only the west that is worried about Iran note what saudi Arabia is proposing and bear in mind the Saudi's have just signed a deal with China for development of Nuclear facilities obstensibly for production of Electricity.
Iran of course justify's their Nuclear program under the guise of production of Electricity,If that was the case then in both cases Technology is already in existance for use of Nuclear Fuel in Reactors where the end product has no weapons grade byproducts for anything other than a Dirty Bomb,Not a Nuclear or Hydrogen bomb.
Many people have used the emotive aspect of Hiroshima and Nagasaki as proof of concept regarding the Nuclear threat,Military around the World have long since developed Weapons to destroy the inhabitants but not the infrastructure with Atomic technology and with the mindset of many within the United Nations I consider that a more plausable scenario in future War.
Asian Defence net listed in the link is as good as any other for a broader perspective as to what is happening in our region and it is from a perspective rarely seen from Western Media who along with the Political class generally have an agenda of keep the people in the Dark.

This dispute has its basis on both countries needs for the oil and gas deposits in the area according to The Australian.
