Greens trying to stop logging in NSW Native Forests

The Nature Conservation Council of NSW is busy gaining support for their "campaign to stop senseless destruction of NSW's forests".

After their success in Tasmania recently, with Australia's largest woodchipper Gunns Limited announcing that it would stop logging native forests and harvest plantations, they are lobbying to now stop Nippon Paper and all unsustainable logging of native forests in NSW. What do they call unsustainable? That frightens me!!

They talk about tens of thousands of hectares of native forests being destroyed!!, illegal logging and breaches as well as protected rainforests and old growth being unlawfully reduced to bare stumps!

What garbage!! The average landholder would make $500 out of a load of 20 ton of chip! not a viable option! and the timber they use now for chip is mostly waste.....very sustainable if you ask me!!

Together with PVP ( Property Vegetation Plans) and the Native Veg Act how could anyone slaughter tens of thousands of forests and lay it bare and get away with it!!! Landholders are responsible legally under the PNF ( Private Native Foresty Code) to manage and harvest sustainably! The government owned Forestry have their own code. So many lies are being told to the uneducated city folk to gain support...as usual! They are asking for donations to support their cause!

Logging is the same as pasture management. Do nothing and it produces less!! Encourage regrowth and root depth through proper management, and nature's cycle improves!

We have to stop the closure of our Australian hardwood forests to preserve incomes, and forests!!!!

This was NOT NEGOTIABLE! It was a condition! And the point of contact providing further information was AgForce! WTH!?! I would own it, but as you pointed out you can negotiate re use of the land - but WHY?
Why should we have to do that when we would not destroy the very thing that we have paid for? Why would we not protect it? Talk about treating "free people who care about their environment like idiots!!"
Among other conditions to freehold, we had to fence off both sides of the river, we had to survey and fence off both sides of the road, we could only ever use it for stock - we could not (stipulated in the documentation) diversify into any other land use! WTF??? Also the property would then be used for stock to travel through - the property is a buffer zone, NEVER had travelling stock through it as a bio-security measure! So now un-protecting the very thing that previous owners, and us, helped to protect our area from re parthenium!
We had to have regular checks on the land that was entered into - inventory on the Nature Refuge Status areas????
This is just to name a few! So why, when the Nature Refuge status legislation can be changed at any time, would anyone voluntarily enter into one - (rhetorical question) because of the ability to freehold as the "carrot" but is it really worth it in the long run, due to the fact that unless you own your property outright, you are obliged by your bank (doesn't matter which one) to declare the nature Refuge status, as an interest by the state government? But hang on, isn't it YOUR land??? Did you not PAY for it?
Also you must, if you are in a Wild Rivers area declare this to your financial institution - well hello - one doesn't have to be Einstein to figure out that the reason that the banks demand to know this information is it affects YOUR equity rating - and its NOT an equity gain mate for the land owner! The Govt has used YOUR private finances to GOVT gain!

We have a Nature Refuge over 4500ha, that is half our property and I can assure you we are not rabid greenies. We freeholded in 2000 and this was the way we "had" to do it. But we have our management plan over that land and we graze it and harvest timber , to sell, off it, we burn it, we chase weeds on it and so far we have the right to say who visits it and we are not at all generous in this regard.

The Nature Refuge landowners are often normal graziers,farmers etc putting our land where our mouth is: as opposed to theoretical greens who give up nothing of their own.

I did not think the actual Nature refuge Landowner Association would have had resources to help fund the AGFORCE conference as there were not many of us and the membership fee was $25.

They did attempt to run the 2010 Landcare Conference which was canceled at the last moment due to lack of sponsorship.

However you won't have to worry about that association any more as it is in the process of winding up. There was no quorum for AGM and no nomination for committee roles.

That is the trouble with the young Uni graduates running the public service these days, they have absolutely no idea. I was the 'runt of the litter' my brother and sister are quite a bit older than me. My parents were old enough to have lived through and remembered the 'Great Depression;. My father and his mate survived by growing tomatoes along the side of the Strathbogie Road. My Grandfather was a Blacksmith and as soon as my Dad was tall enough to reach the handle of the bellows he got his first job.

When I was working in the Public Service in the '90's the government was 'downsizing' so a lot of the old foresters were given, or asked for, a redundancy. So we were left with guys in their late 20's and 30's who had a Uni degree but not much practical experience. Then we had the big alpine fire of 1998 and then again a few years later was a similar one. Now while these guys had had some practical experience in forest fires they hadn't been around long enough to experience a really big fire.

Oh BTW, when I was employed there I was a member of the soft handed, clean fingernail, suit wearing , shiny shoe brigade ! ;-) Did get to go out with the local rangers though when the park adjacent to our Research Station caught fire.
