The Nature Conservation Council of NSW is busy gaining support for their "campaign to stop senseless destruction of NSW's forests".

After their success in Tasmania recently, with Australia's largest woodchipper Gunns Limited announcing that it would stop logging native forests and harvest plantations, they are lobbying to now stop Nippon Paper and all unsustainable logging of native forests in NSW. What do they call unsustainable? That frightens me!!

They talk about tens of thousands of hectares of native forests being destroyed!!, illegal logging and breaches as well as protected rainforests and old growth being unlawfully reduced to bare stumps!

What garbage!! The average landholder would make $500 out of a load of 20 ton of chip! not a viable option! and the timber they use now for chip is mostly waste.....very sustainable if you ask me!!

Together with PVP ( Property Vegetation Plans) and the Native Veg Act how could anyone slaughter tens of thousands of forests and lay it bare and get away with it!!! Landholders are responsible legally under the PNF ( Private Native Foresty Code) to manage and harvest sustainably! The government owned Forestry have their own code. So many lies are being told to the uneducated city folk to gain support...as usual! They are asking for donations to support their cause!

Logging is the same as pasture management. Do nothing and it produces less!! Encourage regrowth and root depth through proper management, and nature's cycle improves!

We have to stop the closure of our Australian hardwood forests to preserve incomes, and forests!!!!

Re threatened species Cate, it has already been dealt with under the PNF Code. Felling certain distances from known sites etc and machinery exclusion zones etc. So they cannot touch us there!! The Code was actually worked out with the green movement involved!! They have already had their say!!......but we will have to be on our toes again...or still, with this one!!

Cheers again!!
Deborah,

We too are portable sawmillers on our own land, 93% of which can only be managed for selective timber harvest under the Queensland Code of Native Forest Practice.

This code, was developed with Conservation taking a big role as, more or less ( it seemed to us) the major stakeholder. We were notified some months ago It has/is being checked for compliance at this time. We have heard nothing further. Presumably no opportunity to stir trouble there.

However we all know as day follows night we are a soft target to rise funds for " campaigns". So more stirring had to follow Tasmania's...what... I don't really think much went on down there other than a talk fest and lots of media coverage. Bad media coverage, when like an infection it spreads the money raising opportunities for the zealot bureaucracy.

The only opportunities we seem to have to counter are:

1. Send lots of information to the opposition political parties. The real facts and info on the PVP and the PNF in laymans language so they can speed read them. Plus heaps of $ facts of the importance of Native Forestry. You can find lots of that on Ian Mott's blog. We have fought with Ian, it seems like all our lives, to support Regrowth Native Forestry.

2. Billboards...I still reckon they are the only way to go. They are more or less permanent, not subject to biased reporting,and...they are in your face every day. Also we could place them in areas where the media will not air our views..the cities. I will donate to anyone who can put up bill boards in any state on this issue. Lots of us own land near a highway and grey nomads also vote.

In Qld we know how effective they were in state election on Broadscale clearing issues. We have to remember for instance the people in SEQld never hear a rural issue. They can't get ABC rural radio, were it any help.

3. The other thing is keep the big company aware of your views. Email Nippon regularly, find a contact in there, or whatever big company that may be a target or vunerable to bad press. Because when the greens follow the usual track they will back them into a corner them "help" them negotiate some pretend deal that may or may not happen in 30 years time and .....poof ....away went all your rights. Thats what happened in QLD...the Queensland Timber Board representing industry ( Big end of sawmilling only not small fixed bench millers) giving our state forests away to Aila Keto and her rainforest mates.

Just my two bobs worth.

We are up here ready to help Deborah. We will be next. Greens have probably found they get more money if they "do" us one at a time.

Unsustainable: Any business activity that refuses to pay the Green lobby exhorbitant sums of money through ridiculous "consultants" fees, to say they are sustainable.

The State Government here in Victoria were quick to tell me that 20% of Victoria is State and National Park, yet, despite many requests, they cannot tell me what percentage is State Forest!

I was very surprised when we had some building work done at my work recently that they were using steel framing instead of timber. The chippie said that the timber that they got these days was not very good because it was felled too young because most of our forests are now locked up
You know Deborah, the best answer to the arguments of the 'Greenies' who chain themselves to the tops of trees is a Stihl with a 25" bar! ;-)
Go Colin , Mate ,Get up "em. I,ve got an old Husqvarna here ,2100 series ,that I bought brand new in 1986.
When we were down the Otways ,knocking down big ash and bluegum ,before the ants and fires got them .
Thats all stopped as you well know, Thanks to the nitwit green brigade.
Which I believe we can blame our education system for their way of thinking ? .
Bred all this into peoples heads from an early age.
Anyway back to my old saw, I,ll sharpen her up and have her on standby.
It,s got a 30 inch bar ,that should bowl a few of them greenies out of the way.
cheers.
Go Deborah , I,m with you .Get up the mongrels.
Logging is good .Timber production is important ,
I wonder if we really ask the average greenie or person ,
Do we really care what happens in a thousand or ten thousand years ?/
I know personally ,I really don,t care what,s going to happen in a hundred years time .
It won,t bother me ?
Am I right ?or am I thinking the wrong way .?

Hello Deborah,
Good to see you having input again. This topic is not my field of expertise but as in Matt's dictionary- the two most dangerous words to civilization are Stewardship and Sustainability

This is code for-shut it down- ignore it -watch it burn all the "biodiversity(including the odd human)"- then have all the crocodile tears and enquiries and the huge public donations to rebuild the devastated areas.

I have heard and I hope it is wrong that the VIC bushfire Appeal is still sitting on a lot of donated money. I won't be falling for that again.

When I was trawling through the DERM website the other day to get the budgets for Climate Change dept etc -

I was amazed at the small print skiting how the govt had one percent of the state as a Nature Refuge now with much more planned and with the National parks- has over 10% of the state locked up!

Also - I found it disturbing that Nature Refuges were the main sponsor or AGFORCE's state conference. These greenies are like termites- they never sleep.
The interesting thing is Paul, that after your Dad fell timber on Fraser Island, helped by many others in a managed selective harvest, the Island was then claimed to be the "Jewel in the crown " of Queensland's protected areas.

One can only assume enhancement rather than harm to that environment after years of logging.

The only reason Queensland State Forests ran out of decent resource was after the early 50s/60s they did not put resource into managing the regrowth. After harvest in Queensland the regrowth is always explosive and needs thinning to keep growth rates, form and function.

There is peer reviewed published evidence to show the small diameter harvest, agreed to by the green movement that is going on now, will do long term damage to faunal habitat and no doubt water catchments. No one has any plans to thin the soon to be locked up areas and restore normal stand stocking.

Sorry Rob, just to disagree you said:

"Also - I found it disturbing that Nature Refuges were the main sponsor or AGFORCE's state conference. These greenies are like termites- they never sleep."

We have a Nature Refuge over 4500ha, that is half our property and I can assure you we are not rabid greenies. We freeholded in 2000 and this was the way we "had" to do it. But we have our management plan over that land and we graze it and harvest timber , to sell, off it, we burn it, we chase weeds on it and so far we have the right to say who visits it and we are not at all generous in this regard.

The Nature Refuge landowners are often normal graziers, farmers etc putting our land where our mouth is: as opposed to theoretical greens who give up nothing of their own.

I did not think the actual Nature refuge Landowner Association would have had resources to help fund the AGFORCE conference as there were not many of us and the membership fee was $25.

They did attempt to run the 2010 Landcare Conference which was canceled at the last moment due to lack of sponsorship.

However you won't have to worry about that association any more as it is in the process of winding up. There was no quorum for AGM and no nomination for committee roles.

Regards
Dixie
One of the worst positions to be in is to have a forest plantation as a neighbour.
The plants are hybreds and the seedlings (called weedlings) particularly pine, go everywhere. They are no good for timber as they are hybredised, if you are near a water course or wetland you are unlikely to be able to poison them and clearing these days is a dangerous journey into the unknown with all permits and paperwork needing to be firmly in hand before you start.
Add to this that biodiversity and monocultures do not go together and nothing is to be achieved.
Selective logging of native forests would seem to be the way to go but once again the urban greens have got it wrong.
Perhaps the Greens and other anti-loggers would like to tell us all who these people are?
